Sanibel/ Captiva Florida

Me & the wife were in Sanibel Island, Florida two weeks ago and had a ball. Fished the surf early morning and evenings. Caught Spanish on a free lined menehaden and caught flounder, jack cravelle, black drum and some nice bull whiting on live shrimp. Menehaden & mullet were very plentiful.
Fished Blind Pass. This inlet is setup very similar to Breach Inlet. Shark fishing at night is very popular. Found out that a 10’ Tiger was caught the night before we came in. My wife caught a couple of nice snook 22" & 33". We both caught a few keeper trout, black drum, sheepshead and a few mangrove snapper around the bridge pilings. Had fresh fish for dinner four nights. The local bait store, The Bait Box is excellent and the guys were not shy to give away fish spots & info.
Beautiful place and the locals are very informative and friendly. Beaches are not crowded and non commercial. Going back next year.

That is a beautiful region. I fish a little further up in the Ft Myers area with my Brother in law and he’s always going to Sanibel island to fish and the fish are plentiful and the water is beautiful Not a bad haul to the area with a boat.:sunglasses:

Too Fish or not Too Fish
That be the question!

Did not see any Tarpon along the beaches. The guys at the bait shop said they should be showing up “any day” when we were there a few weeks ago, so they should be there by now. They also said the snook should be thicker in the surf zone around the end of this month.

Hey there Stalkinflats…the poons are starting to show up according my sources… We always fish pine island sound for trout and early am reds. I’m I guessing the migration has been earlier this year on the gulf because of the weather on either side of the passes. Go to Caya Costa and the you can pick of snook all day from the beach… Best bet is to ancher up about 100 yrds off Caya and wait, that way you don’t spook the poons and you can fish for hungry snook schools being lazy bc of the water temp and then when the the schools of big boys circle get after em

Those islands hold a special place in my heart. A tropical island paradise with all the conveinances of home. Taking family & friends down to ‘Tween Waters Inn on Captiva the 2nd week in June. Happy to hear Blind Pass has become productive again. We love drifting the flats behind Captiva early in the morning for trout, reds, tarpon & some amazingly large sharks (especially for 3’ of water) & spending the hot afternoons poolside. After a wonderful meal & watching the sun melt into the Gulf, most of our evenings are spent fishing for fat snook & sharks on the beach. Sometimes we have postpone our fishing to wait for a beach wedding to conclude. Noone wants a big linebacker looking dude trying to hog-tie a fiesty shark in the background of their wedding photos. LOL! Biggest shark to date, an 8’11" lemon that took the bait 20’ from the beach.

Sight fishing for snook all up and down the beach on Sanibel. Great fishing for reds, trout, sheeps, mangrove snapper in Tarpon Bay behind the island. There’s even a fly shop on the island too. Fantastic place.
