Santee Cooper regs

I don’t regularly target stripers anywhere, let alone on Santee, so I don’t really have a dog in this fight but I have to laugh at the “I am sick of the DNR constantly with their hand in my pocket…” comment. If the DNR is all about “money grabbing,” please explain to me why they are grossly under-budgeted and have been for many years. The General Assembly is the entity “in your pocket,” not the DNR. “Money grab on the deer hunters” is another laughable comment. I was born and grew up in a different state and I’ve traveled and hunted in other states and if you for one second believe the DNR is on a “money grab” with the fees charged to resident hunters, then you sir need to get out more or at least realize it’s not 1959 anymore. SC’s resident fees are some of the cheapest in the country. Granted, the same can’t be said for NR fees but that’s neither here nor there.

Point being, the DNR doesn’t “pocket” near as much of “your money” as you’re accusing them of pocketing. If you want to visit the majority of “your money,” go see your elected officials at the State House. They’d let you visit with “your money” if they hadn’t already mismanaged it and pissed it away.

Just because you don’t understand or agree with measures taken by the DNR doesn’t mean the DNR is wrong for doing so. Again, the DNR can’t do anything on its own. It needs approval from the General Assembly so again, if you’re going to point the finger of blame, make sure you’re pointing it in the right direction.

God bless the “ignore” function.

It takes about 6 years for a female and 7 years for a male to reach legal size. So you are only now starting to get to the first batch of legal stripers that were stocked since the regulations changed. If the fish are as so fat that they look deformed they are certainly not stunted. It will take time, but the fishery could go back to what it was. It will be 3 or 4 more years before any of the fish stocked after the regulations even reach 20#.

I just noticed that the state senate kicked the bill back to the house with a provision that limits everyone in the state to 5 stripers 26" or more in length per year across all state waters (if you do not believe me read it for yourself, take special care with the language). This will be done by DNR issue tags. The DNR gets to be in charge of a fee schedule and implementation of this new “trophy system”. What a (**() joke.

**edited for clarification: The five tags are for trophies only. Any striper anywhere in the state that is over 26".

What’s the Senate & House Bill numbers? If that is in fact true, then every single Striper Club in the state will be up in arms against the legislation …

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

Okay … So I went and looked up the proposed legislation …

Your characterization of the legislation is not accurate …

The legislation is as follows:

H 3698
Session 122 (2017-2018)

(E)(1)(a) For purposes of this section, ‘trophy striped bass’ means any striped bass greater than twenty-six inches. A trophy striped bass must be tagged as prescribed by the department. It is unlawful to possess a trophy striped bass that is not tagged.

(b) In the Santee River system from October first through June fifteenth, it is unlawful to take or possess a striped bass less than twenty-t

Thanks for the clarification Rick.

So technically what they are trying to do is make it so you can keep some fish, but protect the big fish…sound like to me big shrimp should be happy that he gets to keep some fish.(because that’s what the real reason for this post was right??? So he can keep some of the 25" fish)…if not then he has other agendas (complaining about the govt, like we all do)

“All fisherman lie. And if they say otherwise, then they’re lying”

The Senate version is the one that meanders into the plan for a tagging system in an effort to accommodate the concerns of a few folks. In an ideal world, this makes sense, but it looks impossible to administer in a fashion that wouldn’t end up in anarchy and universal frustration.

Edited: I see the mistake in my interpretation. It was not intentional. I failed to realize that “For the purposes of this section” Was for subsection E only until I read your post and reread it a few more times. That being said I still disagree with it and I still feel like the legislature is trying to steer the money towards a certain pet area.

And to Bangstick, as much as I respect the DNR and what they do, they are just another government agency with their hand out. Collectively they do everything they can to steal every penny I make. It is theft. The big difference with the DNR is that it manages something most of the working population adore. My tax burden has increased tremendously in Berkeley County, and SC in recent years. I have become sick of it. I like how you placed the phrase your money in quotes. This is very revealing. Yes MY MONEY. I earn it. It doesn’t belong to the collective because they voted that it would be okay to help themselves to more.

If the DNR has their hand out it’s only because the General Assembly keeps taking from them. I’m not a fan of anyone getting into my pocket, I get it, but at least know who to be mad at for people getting into your pocket. Like I said, the DNR doesn’t do anything without the General Assembly’s blessing. I get the DNR is easier to criticize but again, if you’re going to use valuable breaths, at least use them on the right people.

That said, I realize I just wasted “Interweb breaths” on you because you’re simply one of those DNR haters and you’d be displeased with anything and everything they do. Sadly, you’re not alone in that so it’s hardly original or shocking. I choose to have faith in science and the wildlife biologists that work for the DNR. My biggest problem with the DNR is they’re not allowed to do their jobs because the elected officials in the General Assembly, their deep-pocketed good’ol boys and misinformed know-it-alls get in their way. For those that feel the DNR has an agenda, you’re right. Their agenda is the betterment of the state’s natural resources while balancing and maximizing the enjoyment of said resources by the residents and visitors of SC. Let them do their jobs, and they’d be able to prove it.

God bless the “ignore” function.

I am not a DNR hater. I do not like the way they have been conducting some or their business as of late. I believe some of the management schemes have been a little dubious; and I do understand that this is only MY informed opinion. If the intention is to raise revenue, then raise the price of a fishing license or the price of the hunting license. My problem is more with the upper echelon and the senate that seems to be in their pocket as of late. I already know that the DNR would be the only profitable
