Santee River questions..

…just curious, never been there before. I’ve heard at Wilson’s Landing it’s shallow and rocky on the bottom for a ways out. What size boat can you run in there?

How is it at Arrowhead? Any better running a boat?

Any other landings on the Santee (Upper end, not by the coast) or Rediversion Canal that are usable?

Was thinking about trying for bream and bass late Spring/early Summer, just want to have a general idea what the water depth/conditions are like.

Learned the hard way that wilsons is rough downstream from the ramp. Upriver is fine though

Down river from the landing is limestone bottom, for about 400 yards. The water averages about 24 inches deep is that stretch, and unless you are planed out you probably will drag bottom. The river is fairly safe for about 2.5 miles down from the landing, any further than that…and you are tempting fate if you don’t know where the submerged timber is. There is a deep hole not to far below the landing, when running down river through it stay to the far left, since there is a submerged tree in the middle just before the water shallows back up. The first island down river ( below the deep hole ) you have to stay to the left, bad on the right side. After passing the first island, stay in the middle of the river, which is fairly wide in that area, but when the river narrows down again SLOW down and idle for the next 400 yards and observe the bottom for submerged timber. Below that area the water gets deep again with high banks on the right. I wouldn’t go any further down river than where the house trailer is…unless you are going SLOW…so you can see where the dangerous stretches are. I run 5 or 6 miles down from the landing, and the guys I take with me FREAK out at all the submerged timber we zoom past. I’ve been running that area 30+ years, and still have to learn a few more logs every year due to the flooding.

I run a couple of 16 ft johnboats down river below that house trailer…wouldn’t advise taking anything larger below that spot, but have seen Bassboats and even Pontoons in the area upriver from the house trailer.

Thank you. Is the immediate area around Arrowhead any better? Any other landings in that area of the river or rediversion canal?

Haven’t been to Arrowhead landing in many years, but upriver was pretty snag infested the last time I was there. The entire river from Jamestown all the way up to Wilsons landing can be a challenge. I always launch at Jamestown and fish/hunt upriver…just in case I wreck a prop, so I can at least drift back to the landing.

Arrowhead is the only landing on the Re-diversion canal.
