Santee to Charleston

New to the site and planning a trip end of July. Hoping I can get some good information on launching before the locks and going to Charleston. Looking for any and all help on this one.

Landing?
How the lock system works?(how do they know when I’m there)
Time it takes to get to the harbor?
Places to dock/stay in Charleston?

Any other tips are greatly appreciated!!
Thank you

I have made that trip many times with the family. The link Tugted posted is your best source of information. The only information I could remind you is, there are two no-wake zones on the tailrace that you need to watch out for… one at the Dennis boat ramp and the other at Pimplico. DNR presence is pretty strong at the boat ramp on the weekends. The other piece of advice I can offer is, when you reach the nuclear training facility further down the cooper, DO NOT STOP and take pictures of the training sub moored to the pier. They will confiscate your camera, and scare the hell out of children as the RHIB with a M-60 mounted on the front will approach you at a high rate of speed. Just wave and keep moving. We usually pull into Shem Creek and eat lunch. The locks take about 20 mins to pump up or pump down, once they get all the boats tied up inside. Once I get into the tailrace, usually I plan for a 2 hour boat ride at a steady pace to reach Shem creek. Hope this helps, and enjoy your trip.

Thompson, We are planning the same trip for the weekend of July 20-21 leaving from Angels Landing on Lake Moultrie. We would normallt put in at Hills or the Canal Resort but my buddy is camping at Angels and thats why we will be leaving from there. We are staying at the LaQuinta by California Dreaming and sliping the boat at Ripleys Light Yacht Club.

Ripley Marina Yacht Club is across the creek from Ripleys Marina. $1.75 per foot with a 30 foot min.
