SAT 10-4

Went out to kiawa reef caught bait cobias were stalking us but not taking anything the ocean was like glass, filled livewells went to about 85’ and were catching amberjacks till your arms were falling off. had 1 mystery bite fought for about 45 minutes back and forth never got a look at him then he went straight down and all i got back was some freyed line where he rubbed on something
will post pics as soon as I can find DSL cable

How far off are the cobia’s now?

ok we saw 3 swimming on the surface about 30 miles out as we were pulling in the lines. We were dumping our left over bait and here they come. We tried to get on hooked but they didnt want anything to do with the hook!

Dont know how you presented them but if all your bait were dead and floating back with the current then next time try this. I will attempt to explain what Im thinking.

You can apply this to different types of fishing. I learned this chunking for bluefins back in the days they would school up on the reefs off hatteras. When you throw a chunk or dead cigar minnow, in your case, strip a bunch of line off the reel onto the deck before throwing your bait out. This allows it to float freely down with the rest of the other baits and giblets. Make sure the reel is in gear, when the fish runs the line off it will come tight and walla.

Here is why this works better than stripping line from the rod tip. I always try to imagine what a bait looks like in the water to a fish. If you were laying back watching a bunch of bait floating at the same pace would you eat the one that floats back then stops, jerks, then floats back the stops, jerk. Get my point when you strip the line off the bait doesnt float naturally with the rest of the chum.

Cobia are finicky fish anyways half the time, then other times they are like pitbulls with rabies. If you ever free gaff one be ready for the consiquences. Another way I have caught them is put a small wounded sea bass out.

Next time I’ll try chunking we were using live bait caught on the reef they were looking and letting them swim down.

That sounds like it would work! Thanks for the advice!
