Started off with a couple trout on the top water bite at day break. Had a couple huge blow ups on our Zara Spook’s that made our hearts skip a beat. Those reds needed to work on their aim. Tooled around couple more hours tide rising till we found the hog hole way up in the marsh. We had torpedoes flying all around us! They were very spooky and had lock jaw. I finnally was able to hook up one on a jerk bait. This is the biggest red I’ve caught in any of the rivers around here. This looks like a jetty fish to me. Made for a great morning hanging a big slob!
Healthy looking fish right there. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report and photo. Nice fish! I’m a relative newbie to fishing the inshore waters here in the Low country. I’d like to get out early one morning and try the top water action but don’t know if tide stages make a big difference. I know that low light conditions are best (just before sunrise and then again at sunset and just after). Is there a specific stage of the tide which is better for top water action? Any advice from some of you more experienced anglers would be much appreciated. Thanks
BigRed, PM sent.

Just like large mouth fishing. Early morning/late afternoon and if you have a little overcast you can get away with a little more time with the top water. Knowing where the fish are during various stages of the tide is the main thing. Low tide when the water is out of the grass is deffinetly easier as it makes locating the fish easier. Reds are moving real shallow on the flats as soon as they can a kinda scatter out. look for tails and wakes and you might get lucky. Jerk baits are my favorite. Weighted shank hook with a Water melon shad fluke has been good to me. Bright sunny days white works good, sometimes nothing works and you have to throw your oar at em! LOL
