Well I don’t really know enough about the area yet to give a helpful report, but we went out Saturday morning. Things were good as we made it down the Ashley and into the harbor. Decided to cruise over to the Wando and work around some docks. Soon as we got over there the wind picked up which was annoying, but no big deal. Got nothing so after about an hour we moved to the Cooper to try to get out of the wind. Stayed there a few hours, and didn’t get anything either. We were working live shrimp and mud minnows for bait. Headed in around 3:30 or 4 and as soon as we came out of the Cooper that (**() wind was killing us. Blowing the wake right back in our face. Tried to limp around the harbor without sinking our boat but it was bad out. I was wondering if anyone else was out around this time, I saw a few people headed out, but I’m wondering what the conditions were on a scale of 1-10 just to get an idea of what to expect in the future. How do you guys deal with the waves/wake coming from every direction? Do you just get used to it? Got back to the marina soaked, but we got out there and gained some experience so it’s all good.
Depending the forecast i avoid open areas or water. I prefer to fish small water like creeks if im trying a new area. Pick a nice little creek close to a inlet or major river and break it down.
On saturday the harbor was at like a 8 to 10 on roughness, the roughest ive seen it for the most part.
Reds were deep in main channel points Sat. If it is windy I usually head way back up the creeks. But Sat forced me in the wind. Soaking cut bait or frozen shrimp is best. We just have to deal with it and be thankful the bats aren’t around!!!

First post I’ve read that made me cringe in a very, long time. The weather channel, or something similar, is a very important tool a lot of us use while planning a fishing trip. The best advice I can give you, is find some guides, or some buddies that know what they are doing, and spend lots of time with them. If you “don’t really know enough about the area yet to give a helpful report”, then you have NO business being in the open water, and 3 different rivers, “cruising”. You don’t want to be remembered as Capt Blue Lips!
A little rough was it aye matey.I commend you guys for going out ,dam the weather.Next time ,follow 40s advice and find a creek to explore.Hey,where did you get the live shrimp? Also welcome to the site and thanks for the report.
Thanks for the responses guys. @badbob, haven’t gotten an email. @sman, we picked up our shrimp from Haddrels, @sacclark, yeah, I’m aware of the weather channel, we knew going out that it was going to be rough, I was just trying to get some comparison since I’m not from the area. I’m actively seeking out information/tips/guides/etc whenever I can get them, but I’m not gonna sit on the dock waiting for it all to be placed in my lap in the meantime.
We were out there early Saturday out from Leeds to the Jetties… for an hour or so… Then up the Wando into a creek for an hour or so where we found some reds… Then back up the Ashley for a spot that was barren… In at Leeds by 1:30 We got beat up through a couple stretches, but its all relative to your boat size… We got a little wet but not bad… What size boat were you in that the wake was spraying back at you?
A 24’ Key West…The wind was flanking our left side coming off the Wando as we were headed towards the Cooper bridge and then a pretty stout quartering wind the rest of the way through the harbor so any spray was just coming right at us. Throw in a couple tugboat wakes and a container ship, and it made things interesting.
Twenty four footer, sheeeit, you’re good to go anywhere anytime around heeya little buddy. I think I would skipper that boat to the bay of pigs,if need be.
I was out Saturday, made it out past the ravenel, and got beat up by wind, shot up the Wando to some good producing spots and nothing. Fishing live shrimp and fiddlers.
Fished till I had enough of wind. Shot up to my marina area docks a bit less wind but same results. Wound up at the dock, cleaning the boat and handing over bucket of fiddlers to one of the dock hands. If I were fishing for water, what a day I would have had. The weather can’t stay like this for ever. Can it?

I had the same luck as most of you on Saturday. My daughter and I headed out around 11 from clouter creek (it was a late night before so we slept in). We fished the sunken barges with no luck. Hit a smaller creek off clouter and had several bites but no hook ups fishing docks and rock walls. All bites on frozen shrimp on Carolina rigs. Nothing on our trout tricks or mud minnow paddle tails. Headed in at 2 once the small craft advisory started. The wind wasn’t horrible on clouter and even better on the smaller creek. There were a few guys catching trout in the area we were getting bites. Had great time getting some quality time in with my little chick, so all in all a good day.
I was in the lower Cooper just pass the 526 and it was horrible but the reds were biting. Didn’t post this weekend but I fished the windy rough waters all weekend. Had to push back to Bushy Park cause the weather was getting worst and landed in one of my holes with some shrimp and caught about 40+LBS of catfish. Don’t know why I had shrimp on the boat because I normally throw them away because I don’t use them, But I’ll keep some on hand from now on.

I was out there all day Saturday with 4 grown men in a 176 KW leaving the Wappoo trying to cross the harbor to the Cooper, waves were 2-3ft with some 4’s thrown in. We made it half way before it started feeling pretty dangerous so I turned around and hit up the creeks on the Ashley and Stono. It was the roughest I’ve seen the harbor when NOAA is calling for 1-2ft the day of.
