Left ripley at 4:30 to a confused ocean that made for a bumpy ride out and pretty snotty first half of the day. Fished straight out in about 150-200’ of water for most of the day. Action started as soon as lines went in the water and didn’t end till we pulled them out. Ended up with 16 blackfin and 10 dolphin. No brag-worthy size to the dolphin but were all decent gaffers. Broke off one wahoo. Ocean laid down nicely around noon and sun came out. Was my sister’s first trip off and despite the weather she loved it and was a real natural. She’ll be asking to go again soon. Girlfriend caught her fist tuna and her last one was a slab at at least 30 lbs! Wasn’t a believer in the cedar plug until this trip. Tuna crushed it. Besides that sea witches and mini illanders did the trick as well. Came across a school of tuna busting flyers at the end of the day- could have circled around and got all the tuna we wanted but caught 3 to fill the box the the brim the headed for the hill. Great day fishing with friends and family~
Nicely done, leaving because of full boxes is a good problem to have. I would of wanted to pitch some baits to the school and see if I could hook up. Did the big Black fin fight noticeably harder? Thanks for the tip on the cedar plug, I will have to get some, any suggestion on a specific kind or size?
i think yall went past us on a rip. good catching. we were the sporty WAHOO
We were on “Cat in the Hat” the owner just bought it and has yet to rename it. First time fishing the boat. I think I remember seeing you and another boat working that rip. How did y’all make out?

Yeah It seemed like the bigger ones took a longer run than the smaller ones- hard for me to say as I like to be on the gaff and run lines for the most part to let everyone else catch the fish. They seemed to prefer the plain, uncolored cedar plug. Dump like half your spool and run them wayyy back.

Pro tip right there. Well done, fellas.
“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”
Thanks for the tip and its funny how people like to do different things. I’ve been on boats before where one guy liked doing all the rigging and line setting and the other like to gaff and give support to the man on the reel.

No, you were smart. It was nasty. I was fortunate enough to fish a sporty this day. Anything under 30’ would take some balls. Did see a 28’ seafox out there… Gotta hand it to those guys
