Went out today looking for big redfish near the inlets. I found them by about 8:30 am chilling in a deep hole behind an oyster bar.

The bad news is I GOT SCHOOLED. I went 0 for 5 on BIG HONKIN REDFISH. That was 5 breakoffs on either 30 or 40 pound Power Pro. :face_with_head_bandage: I got one close to the yak and got a good look at it. I’d guess it was in the low to mid 40 inch range. I’ve caught plenty of reds in the 30’s and this was a good bit bigger than anything I’ve ever caught from the yak.

Most exciting moment was when I set the hook on one and it ripped off 150 yards at 18 pounds of drag in about 5 seconds. MAN O MAN what a rush.

Fish ate a variety today… Live shrimp dead drifted, live menhaden on a Carolina rig, ZMan Ultrashrimp dead drifted with a little dab of Pro Cure, and one ran away with a brand spankin new swim bait in haden colors.

GO catch em up, just take your heavy gear.[:I]

what kind of things were you looking for when you were looking for em?
never tried getting bulls out in the inlets but wunna try

I look for a deep hole hear structure and an inlet. Big vertical relief seems to be the ticket. I found some next to a rock wall a couple of weeks ago and again last week. Today was a scoured out hole behind an oyster bar that was about 15 feet deep at low tide.

Fish were biting best when the water was moving slow.

Too Busy, you mind me asking what your bait of choice was ??

If I want a good day of catching then cut mullet is hard to beat. Yesterday was prospecting looking for a pattern and everything got bit at least once.

TooBusy, by “near the inlets” do you just mean right at the rivermouth or 1/4 mi in or what?

On Friday I hooked something that felt like a slow moving train and eventually my hook broke.

This AM I caught this 30"+ red who hit while I was fussing with my anchor line. He drug me around a bit…

Hmmm, can’t figure out how to post a real pic but here’s a link:

I found the best structure about 1/4 mile in. There’s a ton of similar places on the ICW between the harbor and Bulls Bay as well as South toward Kiawah and beyond. I got lucky and found a few that produce in spring and fall.

Thanks. I live on James Isl and mostly stay close to fish so I’m usually in the Stono or behind Morris or something like that. I have found a few favorite spots too but have only been fishing since last fall so they’re not year round tested. Except for today’s red, I’ve not been all that successful so far this spring…
