I’m not a very good bottom fisher, but love fishing and the ocean. Nice ride out to the Banks but by the time we got ready to fish, a north easterly wind started blowing nicely. We caught three triggers, two red snappers, a 3 ft. shark, sucker fish, a black sea bass, and 5 or 6 snappers of some sort that we threw back not knowing the size limits. I guess we need pics, size and limits. By now the NE wind had picked up and there wasn’t enough lead in the box to get the bait on the bottom. We trolled towards the bank picking up a decent wahoo. It was a slow wet ride in. I’m not sure if NOAA weather or DNR planned this, but I’ve got alot of screws to tighten on my little boat! One rough 2 ft. sea!
Get the “SA Fish Regulations” app for your phone. It updates every day with new limits and sizes for almost all SC fish species. It has pictures and descriptions as well. Good app.

At least of some you got out. Up Gtown way it was already stacked up at the jetties, just nasty. Did manage to catch a nice red, just wasn’t a snapper.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Yes, I’m pretty sure it was the first picture. We threw back lots of them. What kind of snapper is it?
Not to highjack things, but we caught some of the biggest bee liners I have ever seen two weeks ago. Plenty of 4 plus pounders.
quote:Red Porgy. Current regs are 14" TL (which is a pretty decent size one) and 3 per person. Some call them "pink snappers" or "pinkies" because they are pretty pink when they come out of the water. I don't eat them, but they are definitely consumed by a lot of people. They are super aggressive feeders so it's very likely that if you caught a "bunch of them", it was likely these as we often catch a bunch of them when you are on them.

Thanks for the info!
Agree with skinnee, however we fried a mess of them up last weekend and they were delicious! Then again anything fried is!

We have caught a bunch of 18-20 porgy’s this yr…usually would be embarrased to say we kept, not when they are that big…impressive…
quote:Yeah, sorry. I didn't mean to indicate that there was anything wrong with them. We keep them. I've just never eaten any personally. I don't even like grouper. As far as bottom fish goes, it's hogfish, red snapper, and vermilion for me. I think that red porgies are just fine and they are definitely a commercially traded fish.

I think they taste as good as red snapper, not quite as good as grouper or sea bass, and not nearly as good as hogfish. Not many can compete with hogs for eating. Nothing wrong with those porgies though:smiley: Beats the heck out of a cuda:smiley:

Plenty of fisherman went out from Georgetown and Murrels Inlet on Saturday to take advantage of the Snapper season. Sounds like you just have a bad case of Camel Toe that has no cure

The jetties in Georgetown are getting nastier every month it seems. It really sucks in the dark
Thanks for all the info. Sounds like we threw back a lot of good eatin. Fried porgy…yum yum! We’ll know next time. Thanks again!
Sorry but I disagree on this one! Even fried those things taste like Iodine!
Even my kids and dog won’t touch it! We were out Saturday and threw back a least 1/2 a dozen big Silvers. Just my .02 but leave em’ where you caught em’!!
