Got in the water about 2 and started looking around, but didn’t find much of anything till about 4 around pine island. Tons of bait and fish. Got a few on spoons, but mostly on downrods about 50’. Before I left they started schooling and I got a few on topwater, but they were all shorts. The ones I got at 50’ were a mixture of shorts, small keepers and a few decent keepers. Got about 15 fish total and held on to a 23", 25" and 26" for the grill.
Had a similar experience this morning but up the lake close to the Gap. Got my limit of 22-27 inchers drifting downrods 40 feet deep with several shorts. Also jerked the spoon a little. The fish are moving back up the lake.
It’s typical October. After 25 years of serious striper fishing, I can’t figure out why keepers are so hard to come by until we start pulling again upriver in November. Be thankful for what we are able to box until then. It’s one of our sport’s great mysteries.
Heck. I couldn’t even catch any shorts yesterday afternoon. Along with my son and grandson, I had a friend of my grandson and his father on board. His 7 yo friend had only caught a few bream before and had only been on a boat once or twice, so I was really hoping to get him his first striper.
I’m not complaining though. Still had a great time on the lake and the smile on that kids face driving the boat back to the dock made it all worth it.
I don’t think they are inmass, but keepers can be found all over. From Jakes, to Pine Island, to Johns Creek. Not sure about up around Schull and Dreher, but I am sure they are there as well.

Sure. Keepers can be caught. We just have to understand that most days in October are dominated by small fish. You have got to be prepared to move alot and boat 20 or so fish to get 5 keepers.
