saturday at the banks

Captain sam vick, his dad, bert and myself(jason roundtree) headed to R6 to catch some bait around 6:00. the seas were great after getting past the sea buoy. we got to r6 to find loads of bait but were too small to catch. we managed to catch a few on sabiki rigs. I got tired of watching us catch bait and seeing all of the fish on the finder so i dropped down to see what was up. it did not take long for a 2.5 pound vermillion to touch the ice. we decided to fish there for a while, we caught maybe 25 vermillion with some just over 3 pounds. The excitement got better when a mahi swam by the boat. I alerted sam and he grabbed his spinner and cast a live cigar minnow at the fish and he turned and bolted for the live bait and 10 minutes later we had a 24 pound bull on ice.
We also caught a yellowtail snapper a few minutes later here.
We moved on to the middle banks where we found a bunch of fish just off the bottom in 95 feet of water. We caught a strawberry grouper, plenty more vermillion in the 3 pound range and a red snapper
Total for the day

  1. limit and maybe some of vermillion
  2. strawberry grouper
  3. dolphin 24 pounds
  4. 2 pound yellowtail snapper
  5. 1 red snapper
  6. 3 amberjack over 20 pounds(we threw back)
  7. 5 gray snapper
  8. 1 trigger fish

Very nice! and now you’ll be eating GREAT for a while.

limit and maybe some of vermillion…kept?

How do you boys freeze those vermillion where they don’t break up when unthawed?
On another note - Will those Pompano like the guy is shooting hit a
bottom bait? Just never seen one caught -

Where did you put in and where is R6?

Is there room in this class for one more?

I freeze them in water and just let them unthaw on their own. Do not run hot water over them as this will make the meat tough
