Saturday fishing report...

I put in at Jakes about 7:30 am and filled mt bait tank with water. I threw the net one time and overloaded the 50 gallon tank with big herring. I anchored my boat in 42 ft above spences islands and started tossing out cut bait on the bottom. The first fish came from the deeper side, about 50 to 55 ft deep and weighed 15 lbs at about 10:30. The bite was best between 1 and 2:30. I had 6 keepers and 2 shorts. My best 4 weighed a total of 34 lbs. I put my 5th fish in the cooler about 2:30 so I reeled up and made a run for some air conditioning…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

Nice fish Woody…

I fished Friday afternoon in the heat and struggled compared to how it has been lately for me in the morning. 8 fish, 6 keepers but nothing close to 15 lbs.

Thanks for the report.
How do you find your bait? Any particular type of structure or area you look for? I’ve never been able to find my own bait on a consistent basis. I usually just stumble across them from time to time.

This time of year Jakes Cove is loaded with them near the marina. You can see them on the surface just after day light. You need a fast sinking net though. I throw a 8 ft Betts Super Pro 1/2 inch mesh with 1.5 lbs of lead per foot. I recently bought a 10 ft Ahi net, 1/2 inch mesh with 1.35 lbs of lead per foot but it sinks too slow to get them…I like to throw the net a good bit in front of my boat too, not off to the side…

Nice report Woody! And a pretty good day. Five and done is coming!!!

Rick

Good report, Woody, and nice fish! I saw a lot of good sized herring near the ramp at the dam while waiting on the trailer after the DNR tx was over. (Bryan, Randy and I had a good fishing trip to NC last week - 13 yellowfin (30 to 50lbs), 3 gaffer dolphin and a white marlin release. I’ll try to post a couple pics this week.)
