Saturday in the Wando

Put the yaks in at Paradise for a quick trip in the Wando with my son. We paddled down to some docks where I got cut off on some oysters by what felt like a beast (I couldn’t turn him at all) Then Justin gets cut off. He finally lands a tournament winner at 22 1/2" and fat and healthy. We paddled back towards the landing and met another kayaker on a shell bar and hung out with him for a while. While there, I landed a nice one at about 27" (didn’t measure, just knew he was over slot), and Justin (my youngest) lands another at 28" or so. Found a new spot and technique and had a blast. The bugs were ferocious at the landing though. Kept the 22 1/2" fish all the others were released healthy. An awesome day on the water with my youngest son. He’s becoming a dang good fisherman and I am very proud of him.

I need you to tell us the real location you were fishing at. Everyone keeps falsely reporting catching reds and trout in the upper Wando. Ain’t no fish up that way !

Awesome day, Red!

Good report about a great day, TR!

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

@ Vinman- It was! But the gnats at the landing were brutal. They were giving the boy fits. I’m sorta used to 'em and just ignored it while lashing down the yaks. Dang sure chewed through a healthy layer of Off to get us though.

@ Bart- Thanks brother. It was a great day. Best of all my son outfished me (again).! And, I learned how/when to fish a new spot that produces some slobs.

Sounds like a great time!

Go et you one of the net things you wear under your hat that covers your face like the hunters wear. Just a few bucks at Wally World…I keep a couple in my tackle box. May look silly but at least I don’t have a face full of gnats.
Sounds like a great day out !

Haddrells Point in Mt. P has this new bug spray up by the front door, its a bit pricey but it works like a dream. There is a spray for skeeters and another one for gnats and no seeums.

He has a dang good mentor and father!

The “No Gnat” and “No Mosquito” spray does work well. Nothing fully works on gnats though. I do like it because it doesn’t contain any chemicals like deet and smells good.

You mentioned using a new technique. Would you mind elaborating on that? Thanks in advance.

Good day, I have been contemplating rinsing off the yak and splashing it down the for the first time this year … you may have inspired me

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

Eastern- quite a few on here have been using a mud-minnow on a jighead to work large areas, like an artificial. I have never used this technique, even though I have seen Vinman use it with success. Hook a mudder through the lips and cast up near the bank. Work the bait back to the boat like you are working an artificial, just kinda bumbing along the bottom with an occasional upward twitch of the rod tip.

Good luck and tight lines.

I know, Doug. Running off at the mouth giving away all the secrets. Lol.

That’s because I was desperately trying to keep up with Red’s mad skills! LOL! Does seem to work here and there, though.

You are still fishing with 10 digits, aren’t you Red? Thumb healed up?

Good job Red. It’s always a bonus when the kids out fish us. The “Vin-nique” was a very guarded secret and I’m shocked that he has shared with anyone bwahahaha!
