Saturday January 17th

We put in about six hours yesterday trying to catch redfish. We fished all of the outgoing tide and a little of the incoming. All skinny water and went to six or seven different spots. We saw fish or spooked them, but they weren’t cooperating. Day was OK, but temp. never hut the promised 65 degree mark. I think the east wind and so much fresh water was a factor as well. We were the early rises on the water, but more and more boats appeared as the day warmed.

We fished Leadenwah (sp), North Edisto, ICW, and Toogoodoo. Used a variety of artificials. Water temp 53- 56, east wind, stained water, but surprisingly clear in some spots.

We are working on the tips provided by Ron Davis and trying to improve our fishing knowledge. I am sure as the weather warms, these spots will produce as they all look like prime habitat for reds and trout.

We did the same thing on Saturday, same tides. I thought sunshine would be warming some flats and gathering the redfish but no luck on several spots up the Cooper and Wando. You are right that it never warmed as much as expected and sunshine was not as strong as hoped. We tried artificials, minnows, and variety of flies but nothing. Did see porpoises herding what might have been reds in 3 ft of water but no bites. I’m sure they caught plenty. Later heard fish had been gathered near plum island but haven’t seen a successful report from there. Oh well, noticed a daffodil popping up in the yard so there is hope for warmer days and better fishing!
