Saturday Night Report

Met a couple of friends from work and put in about 7:30 to try some bait and/or trolling. Started off looking around on some humps, but didn’t see a whole lot, so just before dark we decided to troll until we found some fish and then bait fish. It probably wasn’t 10 minutes after we started trolling that we started marking a mess of fish as both downriggers went off.

Landed a nice keeper, lost the other and put the trolling motor down and hydraglow in the water. It didn’t take long and we started catching fish. No chinese fire drill or anything like that, but a good steady pick. Drew plenty of bait and they were easy pickings with the net as well as sabiki. I think those guys had more fun jigging up bait that catching stripers.

Think it was about 11 when I dropped them off. Didn’t really measure any fish, but it was probably 50/50 of legit keepers with a couple of them about 24" or 25".

I couldn’t believe how few boats were out there after dark. I was expecting a madhouse. We might have seen 4 or 5 other boats fishing other than the boats at the towers…and it didn’t look like too many were over there either.

Thanks for the report Tim. Gonna take the boys on an evening trip tomorrow since they are allergic to 5:30 AM during summer break:) I’ll post how we do.

It seems that this “allergy” is contagious. I have a few friends that want to go striper fishing until I tell them to be at my house at 5:00 am.

Do you guys use e-free all the time?

From my understanding, as long as you have a fairly new motor, it’s not a big issue if you are using the boat often and the gas is not sitting in the tank for long periods of time.

Is that correct?..or should I be getting e-free all the time. I mostly do now when it’s convenient, but don’t go out of my way for it if I’m using the boat alot.

edit: whoops…obviously meant this in the e-free thread…but since I started this one too I’ll just leave it…lol…don’t feel like retyping on my phone…i already refrain from happy hour posts…may need to include Monday mornings

I thought the same as well Tim. But I had some trouble about 6 months after I got my boat. I was running ethanol with the understanding as long as I was burning it I was fine.

It started out getting harder and harder to get started. At first I thought it was just a cold natured 2 stroke. But then started to loose top end speed. Finally winter was in full effect and I started fishing up top which changed my gas station to e free. About 2-3 weeks on e free it started coughing alot and u started choking it alot while running. It then finally sputtered and blew something out. Immediately began to purr and run super smooth. Picked up 10 more mph.

Havent put a drop of ethanol back in it and have had no problems.

When I was using ethanol I was burning it but it still did a number on my motor.

All thus being said I do have a 1983 evinrude.

No … No … No … Ethanol gas will NEVER touch my boat again … E-Gas took out my boat (2005 Yamaha 150 4-Stroke) twice within 6 months and cost me almost $1,000 in repairs … never again … Worst thing in the world the Government did was mandate the use of corn in gas and then mandate that the price of E-Free be uptaxed in order to make sure the public buys the E-Gas … grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

Will be going out of my way to make sure I only get e-free only in the future. Thanks

Corn Whiskey is fine for the kayak, not the boat. I used it once in my boat when exxon at the dam quit selling E-free. Second trip out my boat didn’t make it to the dock. Had phase separation and filled my carbs with what looked like rusty gunk. Drained the tank and cleaned the carbs and never put it in my boat again. By the time you figure in the additives there isn’t much of a price difference.

It used to be harder to find, couple of years ago. I used the ethanol gas then but always used Startron ethanol treatment. Never had any problems. That said I have not used it since I found a good local station that has it. The hickory Point on Broad river is on the way to boat storage so it is easy.
