Got the chance to sneak away for a couple of hours of fishing on the Saluda while in the Columbia area over the weekend. Fished for about 2 hours and caught 4 rainbows. All of the fish were small. I managed to snap a couple of pics before the camera’s batteries died.

Shadowgrass,
Nice pictures. What kind of setup are you fishing with? Rod and Reel?

Thanks, I use a TFO 4wt with a loomis venture 3 reel. I am actually going to be flyfishing the Saluda with a buddy this weekend, I may post a report if we have some luck.

Shadowgrass,
Anything you would change about that setup? How long is the rod?
I keep kicking around the fly rod thing. Can not make up my mind to jump in but I keep asking for advice on here for saltwater and the freshwater.
Thanks

I wouldn’t change anything about the setup. It is a 4 piece 8’6" rod that casts really well. If I am in an area that does not allow for a lot of rod movement, I will roll cast or just use the top half of the rod with the reel in my pocket. I have caught everything from largemouth bass to baby bream and even a snapping turtle on it. It is a relatively cheap setup that is reliable and easily portable if I am hiking. As matter of fact it stays in my truck tool box when not in use. I have often been on a road trip, see a promising area and if time permits I may make a few casts. Sometimes it is productive other times not, but it is always worth the stop. I would just recommend thinking about what kind of fishing you will be using it for most. As for me, most of my fly fishing is based in salt and as such, I spent more money on those setups. It is all about fun and you don’t have to break the bank to get into it. If you want to give it a try sometime without the investment, shoot me an email and we can set up a trip for you to try it out with one of my rigs, fresh or salt your choice. Matter of fact, I am leaving Charleston in 2 hours to fish all weekend in the Columbia area, if you are around that area let me know and well can get you “hooked” reel quick!

Shadowgrass,
Thanks for the invite. I have been sick for the last few days and just now checked on the site.
