Started off by pulling the back of the creek where Dennis’ father’s friend caught the big one last week-- one bite in 2 hours missed. I moved to the Elbow area to fish downrods. Bunch of shorts is all I had to show for my efforts battling the cold 20+ mph wind. Moved to Swygerts with similar results. Finally, I went back to a favorite creek and back to pulling for the last hour for 2 decent keepers. Wish I hadn’t waisted most of the day on downrods.
Fog, I agree with Striperswiper. Take Pawpaw out there. I went back out late Sunday afternoon, to the spot where you saw me Saturday, and caught 18 mostly jumbo or jumbo plus perch. If the wind hadn’t been blowing me away from them I probably could have caught between 30 and 60. They were swallowing the Berry spoons and spitting out monster shad.
I’ll be on call until next Monday at work, so I can’t take the boat out until then. I’m already rigging up more Berry spoons with the secret oversized red treble hooks and charging batteries, going to hit the water as soon as I can next Monday after work. Daylight saving time should give me enough time to catch a mess every evening next week. Hopefully, they will still be in the same general area. They were hitting the white/silver and the white/silver glitter equally well. I didn’t try any other colors, since I had tried some of the other colors and sizes the day before.
Have some of your big spoons ready or maybe one of your “cork rigs”. I’m marking some bigger fish in with the perch at times, normally they are suspending above the perch. Probably 8’ or 10’ off the bottom.
Guys, I offered to take Diddy perching, but he and Momma took off for Cherokee, NC this past week. I’ll get him back out there soon. As cold as the water is, the good-sized perch will be happening for at least another month.
You need to take Dennis out and teach him how to catch Perch. He has a blast catching brim through the ice in Wisconsin.
If we can get him hooked on perch, maybe he will leave our bigger stripers alone! A 23.5, 17, 11, and 10 in his last two trips is putting a hurt on our population!
