Saturday Report

Spoon and I had the pleasure of taking out 2 of his cousins yesterday-- Darrel and James. The wind, of course, made things interesting; however, we got the job done by switching to more sheltered locations and creative use of the big drift sock. The pattern is pretty much holding the same as my recent reports… A good time was had by all!

Yes pattern is holding the same…we had a very good day yesterday as well. Kept a solid 10, released many more keepers and shorts. Seemed the fish didn’t care there was a front blowing through…they were very active on the depth finder, streaking up and down…next 3 weeks or so should be the same barring we don’t get a bunch of super hot weather…

I concur Chip. The pattern shouldn’t really change over the next month. Now the fish may opt for other areas; however, the types of locations and methods to put them in the boat shouldn’t change until the surface temps exceed the mid 70’s. We were pulling in 58-59 degree water all day; so we should have plenty of time doing what we’re doing.:sunglasses:

Find the fish, Double anchor, and throw cut-bait out on the bottom and chum them up…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

Do you have a trolling motor? Before I answer your question, that’s something I need to know.

LM, You can always look for schooling fish or the gulls diving on the water and cast different artificials under them. I did very well a couple of evenings last week casting topwaters and super flukes after work. Was culling stripers up to 24" before dark on Tuesday and put 5 more nice keepers in the boat last Wednesday. The main thing is to approach the fish as quietly as possible to keep from spooking them. If you roar up to schooling fish you might catch one or two. Go to them quietly and stay a long cast away and you can usually catch multiple fish from each school.
If you don’t have an electric trolling motor then try trolling different artificial baits. Vary the depths you are trolling in until you find the correct depth. The fish will let you know when you find it. I wouldn’t be trolling deeper than 30’ if I was trolling now. You can also locate them with a depthfinder and try dropping a big spoon down into them. I’ve caught nice stripers and largemouth doing that for the past couple of years.

There were a lot of guys having success with cut bait in Saturdays Striper Kings tournament. Top three spots were all cut bait fishing. I saw some nice fish busting the top and was wishing I had a fluke or something to throw at them but I didn’t so I wouldn’t rule out throwing something top water or even an Alabama rig early morning.

For me, I’m going to pull them boards as long as I can. Caught around 25 fish Saturday and ended up forth. I’m just ready for a good weekend with no wind because the past two weeks have sucked!

I wouldn’t call planers fancy equipment. You can buy good aluminum planers for 28$ a set. The release clips aren’t the greatest but they will work.

But if u don’t want to mess with the fancy stuff. Just pull freelines out the back of the boat with herring on them. You can easily get 6 rods out just by using split shots and floats to keep them separated.

Regualr floats? Or the striper ones? how deep would I set it under?

Scout

Any float. If it is a release style float set in about 10-15 feet if it’s just any normal float set it five to eight no weight on it.

Lm, I was going to suggest just what Murrymaker did since you have a troller. You can also pull artificials like Rebels, Rattlin’ Rogues, swimbaits, or bucktails. Cutbait is an option, but I just don’t have the patience for it anymore. I’d rather take the fight to the fish than to wait on them to find me.:stuck_out_tongue:

Where are the fish schooling right now? May try and fish tomorrow evening and this weekend either searching for birds, trolling artificials and possible cut bait.
