exactly. my boat would not go much lower than 3.8 or 4mph in forward idle. Throw a couple buckets over, and it slows to 2mph.

jpru2001 you are right on the money about the buckets.we use them drifting.they are alot cheaper than drift socks.

I did break down and buy a trolling plate though. So far works like a charm.

I was just checking out those plates. My boat is too fast at idle to troll so I think that is an option for me. How does it work? Does it flip up on its own when you gas it and go, then flot back down at idle?

get the easy troller one from cabelas. go to cabelas and read all the reviews and you’ll see one is nicer than the rest. You have a string that releases a spring. I tie the string to something in my splashwell, when you are at idle you pull the string, the spring releases, and the plate pops down where the spring holds it down. If you give it a little throttle and pull the string, then the spring is released and the force from the prop forces is back up into the up position. I kid you not, the thing advertises that your boat will ride better with it at top speed, and it is true. I guess it makes sense because it acts like a hydrofoil.

ok—help me out…i have a few 5 gallon buckets around here…but the handle pulls out very easy…i don’t think it would hold water and still hold the handle…

what type buckets are you using…???

$5 white buckets from lowes. You know what I did, was tie the two buckets together, mark the middle point, then tie taht point in my anchor cleat on the bow, and threw one over each side, so that you get even pull (boat doesn’t pull to one side), and so that they only hung to the halfway point of the boat and never all the way to the back to get in the way of your lines. yeah, it will bump your boat a little, but never put any marks on mine.

Has the lake turned over? I fished this past Sunday from 6-10 and only caught 2 one 22in. and a 30 in.

But we marked alot of fish but got only 3hits??

But I got to stop wishin, got to go fishin

I don’t know if it turned over yet, but I don’t think so. But the dissolved oxygen on the bottom has dropped 1.8 mg/L. Anything below 2 is not good. It may be stressing the fish. It may also be linked to the increased number of floaters.

I have enjoyed reading you guys postings. Moved to Lake Murray about a year ago. SC native from Charleston. so happy to be back after 3 years up north. Would love to fish with any of you, usally on channel 68 when out there.

Went out Sunday and got skunked in the AM. Marked fish. Trolled u-rigs between Spence and Towers - - -nothing. Decided to go back out in PM for yet another beating. Trolled for about an hour, umbrella rigs, working down-riggers to put them right on their heads. No bites. Huge storm was moving in. We were working one last hump, rain is pounding 20 yards away, and finally two rods went down just as we were closing up shop. Had a double hook up on one, single on another. Quickly got them in the boat - all nice fish. Long, wet ride back to Prosperity side of lake. Put the curtains on just in time.

I know everybody loves pics, so here is one for you. Caught these 5 on Monday, August 20. Same area, same gear. Great day. Just for reference, the one in the middle is 27".

Ready for some fall striper fishing…how much longer?

WP you fish about the same way I do from looking at it. Downriggers, green berkeley line, bucktails and u-rigs. what size bucktails you been using? We were using like 3/4oz or so the last couple weeks, but I have caught striper on like 4oz bucktails with 9" shad bodies (huge). Are those cannon HS easy trolls? Thats what I have also.

We were also putting them on their heads this weekend with nothing. Caught a couple last saturday though. I am ready for the water to cool down a little bit, maybe make it a little easier on us.

Yes, Cannon Esi-Trolls. I’ve benn running 3/4 oz bucktail u-rigs with 3" grub body trailers and 4" shad body trailers in a 5 and 7 spread. Been getting good hits between 8 and 8:30 pm going over the humps in front of Pine Island. It is tricky fishing because the depths go from 20’ to 70’ to 30’ and so on, lots of up down on the down riggers. Have lost a couple of u-rigs but that’s where the fish are so the price you pay I guess. I also have heard they are schooling just before dark in the shallows in front of Pine island but have not seen it myself yet. Going to try tomorrow morning, going to take some cut bait and try the down rods first. Have heard they are coming through the channels towards the towers in pretty big schools around 9:30 am.

I’m just ready for fall and trolling in 0-10’ of water! Thats about the size of urigs I use also. Do you have any good information on about how much lower they run than your downrigger ball depth? Or for that matter, how far behind the boat do you usually run them?

Yea, that is a bad photo--I didn't check it out before cleaning the fish so it's all I had. Promise guys, I did have a good day and was happy.
