Saved the boat lost cooler

My friend capsized his boat yesterday at the jetty’s. They were alright, we found the boat and was able to save it. He lost his white engrid cooler. We looked for it at the jetty’s last night but didn’t see itit. It’s got a nice sheep head in it. If anyone finds it and wanna do a good deed call me 843 509-0045 Joe

Care to share the story about how the boat capsized and what went wrong? Every time something like this happens, it could be a great learning experience for others. Glad everyone was ok.

Storm came in too quick. Small boat, nasty chop at the jetty’s, 2 water spouts offshore I believe. Not a good combination

I was hunkered down in a creek in wando when I got call. We shined a spotlight at mouth of jetty’s till 12 if anyone was wandering. Nasty storm. They were in water for an hour before pilot boat picked them up. Good thin it was incoming tide.

PLB is a good option even inshore!

Got to ask, what size/type of boat were they in?

Not to derail your thread but, what are good options for emergency rescue devices (beacons)? I rarely go more than a couple of miles offshore but more and more have been thinking that even in that situation, such a device would be good to have aboard.

DF I’m going to buy the ACR ResQLink + PLB #2881 it runs $249 and has the transmits on the 406 Mhz frequency that the satellites relay to Coast Guard so that little antenna can always get out. Don’t have to worry about radio contact. It also transmits on the Vhf frequency as a tracking beacon. It is relatively cheap, pretty small and works about the same as a full sized $500 EPIRB.

Do not forget about servicing. Batteries need to be replaced periodically. ACR is serviced in US.

16 stinger center console. I would say flares is an absolute must with a handheld submersible VHF. When your floating you can see everyone but they can’t see you.

I have an ACR Global Fix Pro EPIRB that is due for batteries. Anyone know the best place to get this done for a reasonable price?

Thanks,

Price of batteries is not a option for
the price of a life.

DF, I just picked up the ACR 2881. They had a $50 rebate going and after getting that it will be under $200 to my door. The downside to a PLB vs EPIRB is the battery is only speced out for a minimum 24 but I’m a inshore/nearshore type guy so that works. Battery replacement is every 5 years at an ACR service center and looks to be about $130 for it. But all things considered it is cheaper than a fancy cooler and can save my life. The Sea Pro that just sank off Charleston put me over the edge, I realized I was responsible for my family and crew and couldn’t justify not having it anymore for the price.
