One of my fishing goals is to catch a tailing redfish, so I went out to try this evening. I had scouted a likely spot and had been there once with no life showing. Went to a little different spot tonite and got there early…the water was coming up and spilling onto the flat.
Waited till the water got up to above the ankle while eating my dinner that I put in my backpack. No fish! The flat had everything a redfish could want. Tons of fiddlers, periwinkles, mussels, etc. Frustrated, I went back to the boat.
By now I could see the water from the creek and if there was a tail you could see it from afar. So I idled up the creek looking at flooded areas, and nothing. Hmmm.
Turned around and idled back then looked into a large flat and…a TAIL! I nosed the boat in and in my haste to get out and persue my prey I nearly fell off the front of the boat while climbing over[:0] - also forgot my backpack and camera.
Unfortunately I left my flyrod at Edisto so all I had was my spinner and a root beer DOA shrimp. I got within about 20 ft of it and waited to see which way he was going. Cast about 6 ft away and it never showed much interest. I ended up seeing about 6 fish and had maybe 3 opportunities but no takers. I’m thinking that the size and weight of the DOA were a lot of the problem because it made a big splash when casting it. But I also have heard that sometimes they just wont eat…
It was a very cool experience seeing the tails and even the fish swimmming by and I CANT WAIT to get my first tailer OTF. I am even more excited that I now have a flat that I know holds fish and I found it myself (ie. no one told me about it). Not getting one tonite will make it all the more sweet when I do!
