Just got back from Homosassa/Crystal River from a scallop trip. It was a fun trip. Got the limit on Friday, 1/2 a limit on Thursday, and 1/4 the limit on Wednesday. Took a while to find some areas not picked over. Stayed at the Plantation Inn. That was good because you left in Fresh water and returned in fresh water…never had to rinse the boat. Also cool to snorkle in the springs.
We did that a couple of years ago for the first time just south of where you were (Bay Point/Hernando Beach). Is that not cool? If you love scallops, it is something everyone should try. A local friend taught us how to clean them using a Shop-Vac. Super fast and super efficient. It was neat because even my youngest could find and gather them. We limited out 3 different times. I was actually on the verge of getting tired of scallops.

Yes that was cool. I saw them on you tube with the shop vacs. there actually was a tent set up on site where they were charging 5$ a gallon to clean them. We cleaned our own using the spoon technique. The lady that was running the show at the scallop cleaning tent said we were butchering them! She also said as the season nears the end, the scallops are harder to find, but much bigger than at the start. I didn’t know they grew that fast.
Last time Scalloping for me was with Dad near Panama City in the early/mid 70’s. We would drag for them and bring home a trash can full any time we wanted some. Never had to hunt for them and never saw another person dragging for them. Mom still has a few bags of shells in the attic. After bleaching and oiling and drilling a few holes in them, I sported a few scallop shell/fishing string necklaces when I was a kid.
Thanks for posting the pics, I haven’t seen a live scallop in a long time.
I have a small 2 gallon one that I used. After running clorox through mine a couple of times and letting the hose soak, you can’t smell a thing. I did throw the filter away.

Cooked? Some we sauteed in butter, garlic and lemon and made a pasta/scallops dish, some we broiled with butter and parmesan cheese. My son and I even ate some raw, quite tasty and sweet.
