Scallops

Is there a decent amount off anywhere in SC??? I’m just curious as I know they grow in Florida big time, and also up north. Never hear of any being caught around here.

no commercial harvest here, divers do see them here though

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”

Back in the 70’s there was a concentration found off SC. Shrimpers quickly retooled and went scalloping. I can still remember seeing boats return to Shem creek so loaded down they were about to sink. Unfortunately it ended almost as fast as it started.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Scallops.

You could set up at the harbor end of Shem Creek and put a whole squid on a double hook rig on the bottom. You’ll catch “scallops” there…big ones…some have a wing span as wide as my 1972 tri-hull star craft. Just be sure to stay out of the channel. I usually get as close to the bouy marker as I can. Fish off of the creek side of your boat for scallops and drop a chicken neck and a 1oz sinker down on the marsh side of the boat for crabs. Can’t beat a fresh scallops and crab dinner.

Everyone is destined for greatness…the rest is up to you.

Had to think about that for a min… I get it now. Piece of conduit and a hammer will punch out some nice round "scallops.

Never saw a real scallop off our coast but sure did get them in the bays around Tyndal AFB in the early 70’s.

If you’ve ever tried stingray wing, you’d doubt the old scallop wive’s tale. Not only does it taste different, the texture and look are so different that it’s hard to believe anyone could be fooled.

I was just wondering if there is anywhere you can do some shallow water diving for some. Anyone got a clue??

You got me curious… Started asking around and then did a few searchs on the internet. Not much info out there other than recipes. I did find this statement… puts them pretty deep.

“Populations of scallops were located in 1977 offshore of the South Carolina/Georgia border in 37-45 m (121-148 ft) (Anderson and Lacey, 1979). The scallop bed was elliptically shaped and oriented perpendicular to the coast.”

Man you went deep into the archives to find that quote. Good job. I recall they were calico scallops which are usually found off Florida at about the same depth. Little deep for snorkeling. Guess the kids and I will stick with grabbing bay scallops in Steinhatchee.

I used to do that!, in St. Joe’s Bay also

very true. Grand daddy fried up some wing the other night and it did NOT resemble scallops.

I remember that well. They dessimated the population in no time. We did eat a lot of scallops for a couple of years and they were goooooood!

flathead belly meat is the closest thing around here to scallop

Jesus saved souls with the truth… He caught fish with a gilnet

There were scallops off of our coast. My uncle use to catch them. There is also a crab close to the snow crab off of our coast also. But there is no market for it.

golden crabs, 500-1,200’ deep. no market exists for them here but there’s a fishery in florida. apparently they’re delicious, but their shells are soft and it’s difficult to transport a load without crushing them.

shrimpers did not retool I was one then. A group form up north came in with their own boats and dock side eq and processed them right there on shem creek.

Local Boy, Just having fun.

Certainly they didn’t destroy the entire population. Where would you beging to look for them?

As with many species they are commercially extinct in this area. If you find some keep it a secret.
