scallops

So I’m walking down the beach today. A 68 degree day in February, you have to love it. One thing I noticed was that there are tons of nice sized scallop shells everywhere. Where are these boogers…?? Are they right past the breakers in the surf?? They just lay there in the sand from what I have read from the scallopers in Florida. Anyone ever tried to gather them up anywhere snorkling or with scuba gear…??

I have “scalloped” in Florida, in fact just last July. We were pulling them up in 4 - 8 feet of water. You have to know what kind of bottom to look for but once you figure it out, they are not hard to find. Sometimes you can even see them sitting on the bottom. As for SC scallops, I believe they are much father out in deeper water.

I also have scalloped in Fla…Steinahatchee.they are bay scallops, meat the size of your thumb nail, I’ve never seem them here, they like sandy/grassy bottom. fun to get though

We were pulling up scallops the size of quarters (the meat, not the shell). They were Mmmmm good.

DFreedom, did you go down near Steinahatchee too? We use to go there and Keaton for grouper fishing and scallops. Bay scallops are far better than sea scallops to me. I dont even eat sea scallops.

We were actually a little south of Steinhatchee. We stayed in Weeki Wachee and put in at Bayport. We didn’t have to go more than about a mile or so north and a couple of miles west to find them. They were sooo good. Tried fishing but only managed undersized trout, ladyfish, sharks and a turtle.

We use to have a thriving scallop fishery here in Charleston. It was fished out

The same thing happened in the Tampa area. I am told that through a proper management program, the scallops are starting to make a comeback. In fact, last year they actually extended the season due to an increase in the number of scallops found. Sure would be nice if they could do that here.

Scallops are stil thick here. Were you here and fishing in the 80s? The cost to ge them is another thing and the fact that they move

Local Boy, Just having fun.
