scallops

I saw someone post a picture with a cooler full of bay scallops. Can you dive for them here in Charleston? If so, how deep do you have to look? I see the shells wash up but never thought about picking them for dinner.

I would bet those came from Florida. You can pick them up in water as shallow as 4’ down there on the west coast.

Thanks DFreedom, just wondered if they exist in our waters since I find small scallop shells around.

I dont know for sure but i doubt we have too many. As tasty as those little bites of sweetness are,i would think you would hear of more people going after them if we did.

These pic were from last year in the Homosassa Bay/Crystal River area. Spent 3 weeks in the Keys, then stopped by there on the way back for a few days. If you ever go, stay at the Plantation Inn on the Crystal River. You can dock your boat right on the sea wall by your room. It’s fresh water, so your boat starts off in fresh water…goes to the Gulf…then back to fresh water. The scallops are found just about anywhere in the gulf from 2-10 feet. Just look for all the boats. They are bigger towards the end of the season.

I have friend that is a local. He taught us how to clean them. Pop them open, suck out the guts with a Shop Vac and sccop out the eating part. Dirt simple. Run a little bleach through your Shop Vac, then some fresh water and no odor. We saw folks up and down the Weekie Wachee River using the same method. I gotta get back down there.

We have a bunch of them off our coast. Some of the shrimpers off the east coast of Florida drag for them still and back in the 70’s and 80’s shrimpers here used to go out and load the boat to the scupper holes with them. The banks up and down Shem creek used to be covered with the old shells. The scallops here live in deeper water than the bay scallops. 80-100 feet I believe. I’m surprised the divers around here don’t target them more often.

The season is almost upon us! These are Crystal River scallops also.

Yer killin’ me there Pelican.
