I posted a comment in the Inshore Report forum about a consumption advisory and thought that a general topic about it would be helpful.
SCDHEC issues advisories for certain fish on specific water bodies. I think that it’s a good idea to know what you may be eating and what the pollutant is.
Click on the link and scroll down to the map of the state. You can then click on a specific body of water to get the advisories for it. Lots of good info there as well.
There are advisories for some popular species such as Cobia, King Mackerel, shark, largemouth bass, mudfish , etc.
This is just an FYI for those interested and I’m not trying to start a debate.
-The size of a fish is directly proportional to the time between when it’s lost and the story is told. - Me
-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad (1/13/37 - 9/27/16 I love you Pops)
-Until you have loved a dog, part of your soul remains unawakened. Anatole France (paraphrased)

I don’t understand. I thought that’s what we did on here
Yeah Pea, it certainly seems that way many times…
I just figured that someone would rebut by saying “I’ve been eating those fish all my life”. I’m not getting into that argument.

The dividing line area of the edisto has some jumbo cats, bowfin and sturgeon. I saw a sturgeon that was well over 6ft. The bowfin down there just hold on and don’t let go. I caught a half dozen 1 day and all were just holding on, even in the boat they wouldn’t let go. Also some good bass fishing down there but they are mostly small. I was told this area is a do not eat area
I can remember that over the summers between years at the Citadel, I was a very poor intern working for $5.25 an hour at the Port of Charleston. Lived in Mt. Pleasant with a bunch of buddies and on Sunday we would go to the golf course ponds at Snee Farm and load up on catfish. I couldn’t afford good beer and King Cobra Malt Liquor was 99 cents a quart (cheaper than water). We would drink the Cobra and eat that dang catfish, oftentimes with 25 cent Ramen noodles, ALL WEEK.
Looking back, I am very surprised that I didn’t grow a third something that I didn’t need. However, I will probably die of some weird King Cobra Catfish Cancer at some point in the hopefully distant future!

DUDE, how many areas do you fish!!
When you say dividing line area, you talking about salt water line by the old train tracks? Been there if so. Not many mudfish in that area, but run up river a good bit towards Willtown and WAY up you get a few. Many more Mudfish in the Combahee than the Edisto.
Dividing lines move! There will be no Frost, East of US 17, today! Snow advisory West of US 17, with 20 inches of snow expected today and tomorrow! Bowhunter, of course there will be a debate on this subject!

Narcosis
You should be fine. The King Cobra, probably killed anything in the fish that would have harmed you.
I didn’t eat anything out of there just fished for fun trying to catch some freshwater fish. I mainly eat offshore fish or shellfish when I eat stuff I catch. I fish all over but mostly within 2 hrs of charleston, any longer than that and I got to make a trip out of it. 4 hrs of driving is a lot for a days fishing plus boat riding time and I like to fish like twice as long as I have to drive and ride. I like to explore new areas when I can. There are tons of mudfish by that train track and bridge area. Nearly every time I dropped any bait down I would catch a mud fish aka the American wolf fish.

The nickname mudfish is our American bowfin. We don't have wolf fish here. American wolf fish is a South American fish.
I grew up in a swamp, and the old timers down the road would fish the black water and pull up “mud fish” snakes and turtles when the waters were low.
I’m pretty sure their “mud fish” were sturgeon, but I was a kid and didn’t have the patience to catch anything but turtles down there. Fish ID is much easier these days with the internet helping us get our nicknames sorted out. Either way, those poor old dudes ate everything they caught… including the stink pots and snakes.
I hadn’t thought about that in a long time. Good times.

After doing my four years there, I’m pretty sure just drinking the water and living there took some years off our lives lol. Can’t say I didn’t have great memories (good and bad)

When you say “stink Pots” are you referring to the little turtles that smell like Crap? My Aunt called them Cow Turd Cooters.
I’ll never forget her telling Dad… “Look Tommy, your boy just caught a cow turd Cooter.” I turned ten shades of red, I always thought a cooter was … a lady part.

There sure is a lot of talk about stink pots, snakes, and cooters… There is no way RBF could find a southern innuendo anywhere in this thread…
