I wonder if SCDNR has any plans or is possibly considering extending deer season for the 2015 Season to compensate for the unexpected deer season closure during the South Carolina flooding event?
Do we really need a longer deer season? I hope not. Personally I’d support shortening it by two weeks.
I want it to start a month later and go thru Jan. We don’t need to be hunting in 100 degree weather in August.
Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.
Hunting through January would be a good idea. Shift the time by a week or so.
Also figure out a way to let the nuisance permit holders use the deer instead of just wasting it.

Some of my Northern Friends think I’m pulling there leg when I tell them just how low our season is!!
I wouldn’t mind September 15 to January 15th. We really have it lucky in S.C.
Of all the things that are ****ed up in our state deer season isn’t one, leave it alone. If you can’t seal the deal by January 1st there is t any hope for you, this time of year you had best check a big does head twice because a few bucks have already shed. . Don’t like hunting in the heat? Stay home, leave things the way they are. Dnr already **** up our turkey season, don’t let them do it to deer as well.

Instead of wondering what could have been, plan now for changes you need to make for next year.
I seriously doubt DNR has even thought of considering an extension. Where is the money going to come from to pay DNR employees, to work a “special season”?

Agree with that. I’ll killed more than a few late season bucks that when you grab them by the antlers to drag them out, they fall off in your hand.
When I was young I loved that Aug 15 SC opening. Don’t care now myself, had enough mosquitoes and snakes, I’ll wait, but no need to mess it up for those who like to do it. Those dates have worked well for about 50 years, why mess with something that works?

This makes too much sense. It will never happen in SC.
The more we just complain…the more things stay the same.
you know a politician CL, they gotta fix it till its broke
Last I checked, it was still hot in September and October around here. Hell, I was sitting in a Bug Tamer and Thermacell on Christmas Eve. If you can’t deal with the bugs or heat, find another hobby. It’s hunting and the outdoors, adversity and the elements are part of it. Book Clubs and Knitting Circles are good for people who like to be comfortable all the time.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

That’s right to the point and funny as hell@.

Yeah, the August opener is what it is and it isn’t going anywhere in the near future. The biologists at the DNR have never been fans of that opener but the GA and low country money wanted it that way so they got it. I wouldn’t say it will “never” change though. People said buck tags/limits would “never” happen but we’ll see that come to fruition within the next year or two (wouldn’t be surprised to see it enacted for the '16-'17 season).
The early opener doesn’t really affect me anyway. Most of my hunting happens in game zones that don’t open until September and I don’t really hit it hard until mid-October. If hunters want to brave the heat just for some velvet-covered bone, I have nothing against them and say more power to them and good luck. I’ve never been a “horn hunter.” I value the meat and the memories far more than any hero pictures, antlers in the back of the truck or mounts on the walls but that’s just my approach.

SC has a great deer program. The season is long enough that all the hunters from other states drive the lease rate through the roof. One thing that would be nice is for the SCDNR to declare open season on feral hogs and coyotes. Day and night for one year - 365 days. The hogs are so destructive.

I’m going to disagree slightly. The landowners drive the lease rates through the roof. Land lease rates are so much higher in other states and SC residents don’t want to pay squat for leases so the landowners take advantage of that (it’s their land and well within their right to do so). The lease rates are FAR more expensive than any resident is going to pay but it’s still cheaper than nonresidents are paying in their own states. That coupled with a chance to shoot a buck in velvet with a rifle and be able to shoot as many bucks/deer as you want is the reason so many nonresidents (NR) ■■■■■ to SC to hunt. I think you’ll see NR numbers begin to decrease when the tag/limit system is implemented. Then, subsequently, lease prices will also begin to drop.

Nature boy, good news for you! There is no closed season on coyote or wild hogs in S.C. Never has been that I know of except on WMAs. Shoot em up. I believe you have to inform DNR if you are shooting at night on your property and must be on an elevated position if shooting a center fire rifle. or something like that.
