School of small, male trout

was fishing Friday…I got in a school of 12-13inch croaking, male trout…I had a ball catching and releasing them.

Is it true that I should have just moved on because there will be no big trout in these schools?

It was a lot of fun…but…

As my mentor, Mr. George Bowman said, “Son, those big fish won’t allow little fish around them.” I mostly always move, but sometimes you can come back later, not too much later (tides), and a school of bigger fish may have moved in. Schools of fish are there for a reason. If I’m struggling for a few fish to eat, or with clients, I’ll throw a bigger plastic, like a Zoom Fluke, instead of a Trout Trick, and maybe catch a few barely keepers out of the school. Bob

PS When you’re in 'em like this one, don’t move!

I’ve caught many a big trout in schools that seemed to be all small fish. In my last two trips we released a trout at 4lbs or better in schools filled with 12inch fish. Bob is right on with trying a bigger bait.
