Schooling Redfish

Went out Saturday to troll some live baits over some live bottom. Was fishing in 50 ft of water with no action. Decided to pull lines and run to another spot. Just as we were pulling the lines in had a school of fish come up behind the boat darting about. Dropped a few baits back and immediatly hooked up with two. Had a strecth trolling plug still out and it went off shortly after. Debate was on about what we had AJ or Cobia. Got the first to the boat and found out they were some nice sized redfish. First one in the boat left about a pint of white “substance” on the deck so I take it they must be spawning. This was a new one for me…

Typically, they don’t start spawning until September. (At least that’s what the book says.) But it sounds like they are doing their thing, so maybe it will be an early start to some fantastic schooling action sure to come in the Fall. The last few years has produced some unbelievable days of bull red schooling action that will eat every lure/fly you put in front of them.

A few years back, while on the way out to the Comanche reef, I noticed the water boiling with some kind of fish. My wife immediately threw out a plain silver spoon and hooked up with what turned out to be a 41" Redfish. We were only 8 miles out from the Jettys. The school looked to be about 20 to 30 fish, all on the top.
