I’m still trying to get the hang of fly fishing. I get the idea for tailing reds and generally know what flies to use although I’m still chasing my first tailer. But now that winter time is here what flies should I be tossing when the fish start schooling? Thanks
minnow patterns have worked well for me-esp Enrico Puglisi’s patterns. i think their key is a slow - almost hovering at 1’ below sink rate. black clousers and toads should get em too. i stray away from flashy stuff this time of year myself
Good deal. I don’t have any of those minnow patterns but I have something that’s close.
Thanks
Learn to tie a clouser…it is really easy and saves you tons on $$$. Use black, tan/white, or olive/white with small lead or bead chain eyes…that is all you will need to catch fish all winter long. I’m sure any of the local fly shops would be happy to teach you.
LowCountryGameCock- Clousers work really well this time of year. Dark colors, not too much flash. You might stop by Scotty D’s fly shop in Mt. Pleasant. Get some tying instruction, meet come cool guys, talk fly fishing, and pick up a few flies/materials. Good advice.
