Scorcher Today

Idk, but I begin to experience heat stress around June 15 most years. The shrimp and baby tarpon obviously don’t hate it, I swear my bait creek was pushing 95 the other day and those critters are just growing as fast as they can

So your oysters’ oysters function can be impaired above 80 and probably hurting at 90 although I didn’t look past the abstract. Likely that study was conducted using animals from farther north too.

Thanks for the reply. I know cold water fattens them, didn’t know about the opposite.

Cold water makes them go dormant / hibernate. Never heard anything about “fattening them up”. I know safer to eat due to less bacteria in cold weather. I could be wrong, but I was told that during the fall as temps start to drop slightly, they go into a feeding frenzy to fatten up, kind of like a bear, then as temps drop more they stop metabolizing. If I’m wrong, I’ll gladly apologize for any misinformation.

That’s because lower water temperatures can cause many varieties of algae to die off, changing the food availability for the bivalve and forcing it to rely on stored glycogen for survival. In shorthand, the oyster fattens up, filtering mostly water and whatever else it can find in colder waters.Mar 15, 2023

I’m sure barbawang can elaborate, as he is a “person of authority”, in that field, but beware Fred…those folks can lie to you, or at least you claim they do!

they still go dormant in cold weather. How is something going to fatten up using stored energy? That doesn’t make sense. they fatten up so they have energy to hibernate.

You feel that cool breeze this morning!!! man it was seasonally cooler for a change.

I told you to confer with barbawang, as he is the “person of authority” on these scientific questions.

And if he replies back with an answer, you’re not allowed to claim he’s lying!

I do fish, not invertebrates.

Almost all the people I know who research oysters won’t eat them. In this case I’m a proponent of blissful ignorance.

FWIW I’ve never understood how they fatten up in the coldest months, aside from the fact that they spend all their energy reproducing during the hot weather so maybe winter food availability isn’t limiting for just maintenance and growth

When I got home to greet the kids off the bus, it was 87 at 48% humidity and felt amazing

Tomorrow morning will be a good time for coffee on the porch

Good info here

Yep, unfortunately that NE fetch is gone by Thursday, SW Friday and 95+

I quit eating them as well, I had a placard from DNR, and permission to pick all of Price’s inlet, pulled some beautiful oysters off those banks in the 70’s and 80’s with my old man, continued till about 90-91, then the quality dropped off.

I’d never say barbawang was lying… Why even go there?

So you know i had some more info for you, but it got censored by the keys. It was about money you spent on a lost cause. Let’s see if that can stay.

As for oyster quality dropping off from 1990 to present, is that a proven thing, or just a hunch? Or maybe you and your dad over harvested?

I’ve been getting them in Beaufort for 40+ years. I think the areas I harvest in are actually better now than 20 years ago. There has been a lot of work put into renourishing and seeding oyster beds. you need to get out and get some!

I orderd Armachillos after your post, OUTSTANDING yeah!!!

Just ordered (5) more pairs, buy (4), get (1) free($117 I think, but well worth it).

Those boogers may just last forever the way they are made too.

Man can’t wait for Fall. The temp in my car the other day was 106. Looking forward to sitting on the deck with a fire in the chiminea.

I got 4 pair and wish I had bought more during the July sale.

Since they’re made to work better when wet, it feels great to put ‘em on straight out of the wash. You’re welcome
