I am fixing to sell my 2001 Scout 155SF and pretty sure I am going to purchase a Scout 195SF. I really like the room and layout and obviously will be a step up for me.
I am undecided in getting the Yama 115 or 150. Scout really promotes the 115 and stands behind that. I understand the arguments for both but I am an older (?) gentleman (57) and really don’t need the top end. I would probably max out with 4 adults fishing.
Is there anyone out there that has experienced the particular boat and the 115 HP ? I really appreciate the help.
I have the 185 with a Yamaha 130 and have owned a 185 with a 115 Yamaha 4stroke. I like my 130 on the boat better even though it burns more gas. If you have the money I would get the 150. You can run with less rpms, and you never hear anyone say they wish they had a smaller engine. I would also opt to put some tabs on it. They will make that boat run like a 23’. I miss the tabs on my old 185. I also sent you a pm.
I would go with the 150. Even though you dont require the extra top end, the cruising rpms will be lower and most likely save some gas and not work the motor as hard. It has been my experience that overpowering a boat can save on gas and wear on the motor. It is also nice to have the extra power if you were to ever want/need it.
I have the 115 on my 175 Scout Sportfish. Boat came with a 90 but upgraded to 115. Go with the 150 you will need the extra power coming in the jetties in strong current.
You should try to see if you can test ride one with a 150. You don’t see too many with that option. Weight may be an issue especially if it doesn’t allow the deck to drain properly. Their older 18’ cc had that issue when 4 strokes became more popular. Other than that, price, and fuel economy there isn’t too much reason to get the smaller engine.
