Sea Brook Island beach 5-18

Fished for a few hours at the beach. Caught a bunch of whiting. Thn caught this guy?..

What kind of shark is it?

Thanks for all the local tips guys… Already worth it to bring a rod down here!!

Chris

Nice catch, caught one last night myself that went 5’8" and fat.those things put up a nice fight. Also, it’s a blacktip. spinner sharks look almost identical in appearance. Best way to tell the difference is to look at the anal fin. It’s kinda backwards but a spinner has a black tip on that fin and a black tip does not.

Awesome.

What rod/reel setup were you using? How was the fight?

That second picture reminds me of that video of the guy getting bit by the little three footer… Lol. I’m sure you know, but control that thing by the back of the head if you don’t want to get bitten. Nice on scaring all the locals from swimming for the next few hours!

Haha thanks guys!

It was caught on a chunk of whiting ( which was caught in shrimp).

I used a 9 foot surf rod, medium heavy, caught it on a Carolina style rig with wire.

30 lb braid wi a cabelas salt shaker reel, I think the 45 model.

I was caught at the last 1 hr of the incoming tide.

I had another one on earlier, but the crimp let go… :frowning: … Next time I will NOT buy pre made, I will just make my own…

I will be back out the tomorrow morning to try again.

Blue Chip, if you are using single strand stainless steel, use a Haywire twist instead of crimps. Won’t pull loose.

Nice catch btw.

Nice little black tip. I’ve made every mistake possible and believing wire is necessary for smaller sharks was one. 80# braid seems to catch more and gets cut off no more than the pre-made wire rigs seem to break. I’ve never caught a really big shark and don’t try to but have come to believe mono is fine for the ones I do want to catch.

Luckily I has a few passer by’s that were helping out. They grabbed the shark as I removed the hook.

Never caut a shark that larger from the beach, I prefer having a foot of fiberglass between me and the teeth!

Wire - the plastic coating was chaffed off the wire about 8 inches up. The circle hook was planted right othe corner of his mouth… I am sure he had the bait deeper and the circle hook caught perfectly! …If I didn’t have wire I would have definitively dropped this fish.

Looking forward to the next one…

Had a Blacktip shark about that size swim between my legs when I was a kid. He bumped me hard …scared the poo outta me and I was running on top of the water just like Jesus. I was gone ! He scraped the side of my knee and left me a little scar for a reminder that we are very low on the food chain when we step in their element. Nice catch.
