Sea sickness relief

Took my boys, ages 6 and 7 offshore for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Simple trip to the reef to go after spades to get their feet wet. My younger son has gotten car sick in the mountains before so I was really worried how he would do. It was a nice day with southerly winds and a 2-foot chop. Within a few minutes of us being anchored he laid down. I asked if he felt ok, I know you are not supposed to do that because that plants the seed in the mind, but if he was not ok I wanted to know right away. He said he was fine but sleepy. I had given them both herbal Dramamine that morning so was not sure if that may cause him to be sleepy or if waking up at 5 am had done it. 20-minutes later he was throwing up and my older son said he did not feel well either. So much for herbal medication. We tried the herbal drops behind the ear, younger son was still sick, older son said he felt a little better. Trying to find a remedy that will work but not put them to sleep and looking for ideas. I had tried the pressure point relief bands myself in the past and they did not work for me personally. I take original Dramamine night before and morning of and it works for me but I know it will make them incredibly tired. Anyone tried the electronic wrist band? I see Amazon has the for around $85 and it has good reviews, just not sure if it will adjust small for a child and if anyone has experience with them.

My 7 year old takes kids Dramamine and I’ve had him
In the worst weather and he was fine

I have seen people that would literally throw their kidneys up offshore , Put them on bonine and they’re eating egg salad sandwiches and drinking beer. I am convinced it is the best seasick remedy out there. Ask Nut3 on the site

My boys are 7 and 11. 11 year old gets a full dramamine the night before and one less drowsy around 2am day of fishing 7 year gets exact dose cut in half. Been 65 or so miles off with no issues doing this

30 years of charter boats, I’ve seen a lot of people puke:dizzy_face:

Both my wife and best offshore fishing partner suffer from it something terrible. My wife can’t even ride in the back seat of a car without throwing up. Much less get in an airplane or boat. My son is almost as bad. Over the years I’ve seen about everything tried, most are placebos, but what I’ve seen actually work is a prescription drug called scopolamine. My wife uses Transderm Scopolamine, it’s a little patch that goes behind your ear and last for 3 days. They aren’t cheap, at about $10 a pop, but if she doesn’t puke for 3 days it’s worth it! In the past I’ve had to tie her to the boat to keep her from jumping overboard, took a shotgun away from her to keep her from shooting herself one night off the Tortugas. The lady gets sick! One patch now and she’s good for 3 days

My fishing partner uses the same drug in a pill form. Scopase I think it’s called. One pill in the morning and he’s good all day. I seldom get seasick, but I did once with him, took one of his pills and 30 minutes later I was good to go.

I think it’s mostly state of mind and if I start getting queasy, which has been known to happen, get up, get out, look at the horizon and not your feet, laying down is the worst thing you can do. Keep your mind focused on something. I do better running the boat than riding in it. Don’t want to be in the cabin too long either. I consider myself pretty salty, but I can throw up with the best of them on occasion and it’s a miserable feeling[:I]

100% agree with Cracker Larry. I’ve never seen anyone get sick that is wearing one of the patches behind the ear. They are about $15 a pop with insurance, but what’s $15 when your spending hundreds in fuel. Well worth it!

LOL. I’ve never had that problem and have used them for years.

I’ve never put one on myself, but know they work for my wife and son. And if you’re spending 2 or 3 days at sea, a little constipation might be a good thing too  Never heard them complain about it though.

Heck yes it’s worth it! To keep Mrs. Cracker happy I’d pay 3 times that much  She is taking a trip to Greece with her mother and brother next month, for a month. She just got a 30 day supply, 10 patches, and they were $100. It’s going to be a peaceful month around here

ive used dram and cant do it… makes me feel like zombie and still felt queezy… used bomine or whatever the nightbefore and has worked…

I have also been on trips during tourneys and used bom nigt before and that morning… cptn pulled throttle back to set lines and ive thrown up… I was fine after that but still lol… I’m aware tourney boat donosnt turn around lol…

ive debated the patch thing… but am very curious in the bracelet also…

As a kid my dad gave me Dramamine night before and morning of and I never got sick, I never knew for certain whether the drugs were keeping me from getting sick or if my body was OK with a rough ocean. I stopped taking the Dramamine in middle school and early high school and never had problems getting sick. Towards my senior year of high school got sick one time I went right back to taking the Dramamine night before and morning of. Since then I have forgotten to take the dramimine a handful of times and I’ve been fine, but as a general rule I go ahead and take it as a precaution. As everyone here is said being sick is absolutely no fun. I have tried the patch, mostly have used that when fishing sport fishers, that big boat role is entirely different than my center consul and takes me a little while to get used to. The dry mouth the patch gives me is horrible and I have had some friends had problems with it affecting their vision sometimes it dilates one eye. I guess my next step with my son will be to try the Bonine the night before and morning of. If that does not work then my next step will be to try the electric wristband.

I have 12 ounce cures for that

Myth Busters determines Ginger is as good as anything.

The herbal Dramamine was Ginger. Did not work for my little guy. Maybe night before treatment as well may have helped.

For the grownups, a little puff on the fish whistle will cure seasickness. I am interested to see how my three year old does with bonine once he gets a little older and I start taking him out on the ocean. He already loves going to the sandbar, so it won’t be long.

In my experience the captain is dead on here. Laying down or going in the cabin is the worst thing you can do. Seasickness typically comes from your body moving and the eyes/brain not seeing confirming information. If you are focused on something like a rig your tying or a fixed item on the boat, your eyes aren’t processing the same info your body is feeling and this disconnect causes nausea. Focusing on the horizon or nearby boats aligns your body and brain to the motion and lessens the nausea.

Years ago, I could not read in the car on a long trip, hated take-offs and landings in planes, couldn’t read on a plane either.
Tried Dramamine, and Bonine, all they did was make me sleepy.
Tried the patch, makes me thirsty, but other than that, never get sick. Watched people throw-up, and cleaned up whatever didn’t go overboard.
My prescription is for ten patches, I am entitled to a months worth, cost about $4 each.
I put it on the night before, and once we start fishing, I take it off.
Last time out, I didn’t wear one…in the past years I have been able to read in the car, in an airplane, etc., so I decided to go patchless. Felt fine.
However I would not go as far as to say it is a state of mind. Went once when everyone was getting sick, and I wasn’t.
Anyway, give it a try, only I don’t think young kids can use it.

hang a double skoal and chug a mtn dew. works everytime!!!

kidding of course but dramamine works best when taken first before bed the night before, once when you wake up. once on the ride, and once when fishing if still needed. I find if you can keep those people (me) from rigging too much in the dark or on the run that they ( I ) am less prone to feel woosy the rest of the day.

Hahahaha. I was on a cruse with my family a few years back, we were trying to have dinner and my sister was turning green. The wind was upwards of 50 knots so the ship was moving a little bit. I popped open my dip can and told her to put in a good plug. Wrong answer, she took a whiff and ran off somewhere to puke. My whole family puts some patch behind their ear every time we’ve been on a cruse, and everyone of them get sick the first day. I’ve always said its in your head, down a few beers and yull be good to go.

Soak a rag in ice water then ring it out. Put it around the neck. Makes everyone feel better.

I’ve been sick once when I was 16. It was my first offshore trip ever, and I got the ice cold rag treatment, instantly made me feel better. I went fishing again 2 days later and have never been sick again.
