Today was the (I think) 3rd Annual See Spot Run Cub Scout Fishing Rodeo. It was the biggest turnout they’ve had so far judging from all the kids and parents on the pier. The East Cooper Fishing Club volunteered to help with bait and tackle donated from Haddrell’s Point. ECFC members cut bait, tied drop rigs for all the kids to use and help with rigging rods and answered a lot of questions about catching fish.
Here are some of the photos of the day:

Bait Masters (I won’t say what I really called our guys at the bait station )
More “bait masters”
Haddrells donated plenty of bait

It’s something ECFC has been doing for the past several years and we are more than happy to help the Scout organizers. Most of the credit goes to the ECFC board members for making sure the donated stuff gets to the pier and we all know about the event.
So many kids love catching a fish - any fish - but their parent don’t know anything about fishing salt water. I saw a lot of toy rod and reels with dime sized red and white plastic bobbers in the water. If the participants wanted we’d give them a loop rig/chicken rig with a 1oz sinker and a 1/0 offset circle hook and tie them to their rods. Last year we must have given way 200 drop rigs. Many of them returned this year and we only had to give away 75 or so rigs today.
The hooks were a little big for some fish and kids started asking for smaller hooks. We’d tell them “big hooks catch big fish” and off they’d go to hook a trophy! But you’d be surprised how small a bsb or oyster toad can be and still get a 1/0 hook in it’s jaws.

Miss Penny,
We were asked as far back as July if we’d be willing to participate again this year and we jumped at the opportunity. I’m not sure who is the event organizer, but they were looking for volunteers, sponsors and donations for prizes. Anyone interested could probably get a contact name from the Mt. Pleasant Pier, Haddrell’s Point in Mt.P. or the Cub/Boy Scouts of America folks over on Sam Rittenburg Blvd.
But I’ll try to get word to you in advance about next years event.

i am an eagle scout and would love to volunteer some of what little free time i have for events like this. PM me if you guys ever need and extra hand for the kids, The guys that made time for me as a kid made a huge difference in the kind of person I am today and taught me the things about outdoors that most people today are just clueless about. keep up the great work,
