Oh lord! Well not really extra parts that I took out of the helm but it seems the pack comes with more than I need? I emailed Sea Star, but here it is Sunday and I’m in the middle of the work with parts all over my dining room table.
I’m in the middle of replacing my seals in a HH5271, but I think I’m going to have O-rings left over from the kit I bought, HS5176? Is that expected? The parts list in the pack calls for the following:
225226 1 Front Shaft Seal 0.210 Quad Ring (used it)
763222 1 Gasket 1/64" Thick Valve Cover (used it)
015621 2 O-Ring 0.113 70 Dur N (used them)
002222 2 O-Ring 0.010 70 Dur N (confused, used 2 on the Port/Starbord checks, got 4 left over?)
014900 1 O-Ring 9 x 3 metric 70 N (used it)
My Supplemental Instructions are called out as copy part: 767327 revD.
So, from what I could tell, I should have 1+1+2+2+1=7 items in the pack. I have 11? I don’t think that I only have 2 part 7’s. Best I can tell I have 6 each O-ring 0.010. Why would that be? Also, looking at the pics of what is included in an HS5176, it looks like I’ve got what are in every pic around the web. It’s got me baffled. I can’t find where the extra 4 rings go?
if you can not figure it out and youve changed everything you can find then i wouldnt worry about it. Some times a vendor like (teleflex) will include extra low cost components just in case.
I found out what’s going on. The parts aren’t exactly extra, but they tell you not to go that deep to get to them when you talk to the tech service guys. One guy was very clear to not go further… so I asked another… he said it was for what’s called the spigot, which didn’t seem to come out but was able to wiggle a lot when apart. I’ll try to post a pic. It kind of looks a pig snout once the three major parts are seperated. It is a shaft with two holes on the end with some spring checks down in it. I was back together already and both guys said there are “never” problems with that area, so I pressed on and reinstalled, refilled and flushed.
One thing that I’ve learned through this is that it’d be good to flush a quart or two through the system every couple of years. My sys was a little discolored but not milky like water was a common problem. Sludge was buikt up in my checks like I expected, but otherwise was in decent shape.
I think I’ll do the cylinder later this fall, after shrimping season is over. I think I’m losing a bit out of the rod seals slowly. I need to add about 5 tablespoons or so every outing. Just a wee bit nervous over that.
Maybe an S1000 AP now that the steering is tight… maybe not.
