Sea Star Steering

Anybody know how to test a Sea Star hydralic steering cylinder?

What kind of issue are you having?

It seems to work fine. I was told it has a leak since if you roll the motor over by hand it makes the steering wheel turn. I have never heard of this.

you should not be able to move the motor when you have hydraulic steering
if you can, i think the problem would be in the helm, but not positive about that

The problem is in the helm. On the back side there are two plugs when removed they will expose springs and check balls be careful not to loose. Then further in is the shuttle valve which is a spool. It should slide from side to side very easily by pushing with a small screwdriver. Either the checks are not seating or the shuttle valve is stuck. Happens all the time if fluid is low and it sits up for a while and condensation causes surface rust without oil present. Hope this helps.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. FISH 24/7---- 25 Grady w/ a couple of Gas Guzzling 175 Johnsons “O-SEA-D” the old “Havanadaydream”

Good practice have the active and visual problem repaired first; This will verify this is not the issue.
