Sea star steering

my 3 year old see hunt all of a sudden developed play in the steering and for the first half a turn its soft . is this air? never seen any leaks or oil residue anywhere? The unit is mounted at an angle so how full should it be?

Could be air, but I am betting you have a sticking check valve. You can to the sea star website or google how to clean them, its not too hard. Once clean a quick bleed should get you all fixed up. I fill oil level almost to bottom of the fill port, it needs a little space for the fluid to move around as it is pumped.

guess it could be. it was the first time it was cold if that could have an effect on it . was 45 degrees here in sunny VA

If the problem persists or gets worse call Boat Steering Rebuilders in Safety Harbor Fla. 813-785-7146. They rebuilt my helm for a couple hundred bucks. From the day I sent it to getting it back was less that 1 week. Great people.

sounds like air in the system

Added oil using the very expensive fill hose. How do they sleep at night $21 for vinyl tube and a 25 cent plastic fitting. Anyways worked the system back and fourth and seems much better.

Because people buy them [:I] They probably sleep in a nice house too. I bought a piece of vinyl tubing and a brass fitting from the hardware store for $1.50:smiley:
