Is there anything I can do to target something other than whiting? I have been fishing in the channel behind deveaux off and on for my last few trips and all I catch are whiting. I’ve tried closer to beach, at different tides, etc. I have caught enough whiting to feed all of Seabrook. I have been using bottom rigs with shrimp as bait. I also occasionally used finger mullet. Maybe the only thing in there are whiting. Just thought I’d ask. Thanks for any help.
Try around the shrimp boat wrecks and some of the creek mouths. I haven’t out there in quite awhile, but that has worked in the past. The Toogoodoo also used to be productive
cut up the whiting and put it on the bottom and hold on! lots of big sharks in that area, and you might catch some big redfish as well. try different depths around the beaches and sandbars. The current really rips in that area, especially around deveaux bank, so make sure you have enough lead to keep your baits on the bottom. There should be schools of big menhaden off the beaches and scattered around the inlet. Look for pelicans diving. Also smaller menhaden and mullet in the creeks around there are great bait as well. Good luck!
Good advice. I appreciate it. I’ll try cutting up some of the whiting and seeing what will bend the rod. Thanks. Looking forward to it. You are right about the current through there it is strong at times.
Head on out past deveax banks to the nearshore reef and get a feel for the million or so undersized sea bass. There is usually plenty of action out there and its not far at all from Deveax.

Do away with the bottom rigs and go with a carolina rig and try live shrimp, live mud minners or finger mullet! Try holes in the creek at low end of incoming. You should start catching spot tails, trout and flounder.Good luck!!
