Seafood Fraud

came across this article on seafood fraud. Curious to see what those in the know would say about our local seafood.

good info, SW… thanks.

can’t speculate on the local seafood… but have known places claiming to carry only sustainable fish… then to end up having things like bluefin belly on the menu.

You get what you pay for… There is no truth in menu law in this state, therfore it is very common for a resturant to substitute fish such as Corvina or Victorian perch as “Grouper”. The high end places typically do not do this, as they can afford to buy local fish. Local and fresh is expensive, if you see grouper on a menu for less that $25, it is not local, of fresh. Many places claim local, sustainable, and they are full of crap. Again…you get what you pay for.

NMFS = No More Fishing Season

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”

I found the percentages surprisingly high for substitution. Didn’t realize the amount of fish that sees overseas processing. Although, my distrust of “local” really went up with the snapper ban. At least I was able to pick up snapper, grouper, and sword out of the lineup.

Very informative article. That being said where’s the the best seafood counters to pick up true local catches? I’ve only ever gone to MtP Seafood when I get the craving for fresh. Also, which restaurants around town make a good effort to serve what’s really on the menu and also make an effort to serve local fish/shrimp/etc?

I think we need a bigger boat…

when i eat fish it is usually caught by me so i know what it is. A nice establishment where my old roommate worked sold pangasius (asian catfish) as grouper. so, since then i have tried to eat only what me or my friends catch. and no worries folks the place he worked is in GA and they have changed the menu to say panga instead of grouper.
