My steering cylinder has started leaking, just curious if anyone has good luck with rebuilding them. I’m assuming mostly just o-ring replacement? Is it a fairly simple job?

I have used these folks. Good work at a reasonable price with the same guarantee as a new set from Seastar.

Look at your steering shaft real close, something caused the o ring to start leaking,i am glad i did,the shaft was pitted real bad,so seals would not have fixed it…
I ordered a whole new cylinder and changed it out …it was not hard but it was a pain getting some of the pieces apart…
I just changed a cylinder because I thought it was the problem. The problem didn’t change so the cylinder isn’t the problem. I could probably sell it to you if you wanted. It is used (~400hrs) off of a Sea Hunt 220. I rebuilt the helm first, no change, then replaced the cylinder because I thought it was blowing by and that’s not really rebuild-able w/o a seastar approved pro involved. I just replaced it to be done… but I’m not done. I must be in my helm and I didn’t rebuild it correctly.
If anything was wrong with it after install, I’ll take it back and refund yo’ money. I’ll give you a 30 day window on the refund. PM me if you want. It is an HC5345 I think.

$90 kit with tool. replace a couple seals then flush and bleed the lines.
Amazon has the kit and takes about an hour and a couple quarts of fluid.
They have videos on youtube and their site.
It’s really not bad.
Oh, you’ll need the bleeder kit too also on Amazon amoungst other places.
I have also heard of poeple taking them into hydraulic shops and using their seals. Not sure if it matters.
I’ve used Boat Steering Rebuilders also. Very reasonable, quality work and fast. They are down in Florida so the shipping to/from here is not bad.
Thanks for the info yall. Btodag i sent you a PM. I that doesn’t pan out ill try just sending it off this winter.

its a pretty straight forward rebuild
just check the shaft for pitting before you rebuild
if the shaft is pitted order a new cylinder
I have the kit too by-the-way. Again, I readied myself to replace some seals by ordering the kit/wrench and just as I got ready to do the job I realized the seal I was suspecting was not in the kit.
I’ll sell it (opened package, but never began installation) as well.
PM your offers.

I had my backhoe/ heavy eguiptment hydrolic man do mine, was cheap and done well!
I did mine last year, as well as my father in laws. Bought kit online, relatively easy to install watched YouTube video for bleeding, I did one by myself the other with two people. Easier to bleed with two people. Some take longer to bleed than others.
generally two hours labor(including bleeding), $100 for the seal kit, $25 for a qt of fluid plus travel. I know of at least 4 guys that will do the repair on site for that
