Seastar Fittings... Again

Every time I try to do something with my steering I run into problems understanding the fittings. I have a had a small problem in my streering that I need to fix. I can slowly, very slowly turn my steering without it responding. It sounds like a check, but I rebuilt the helm last year and it made no difference at all. Usually I at least make it change (worse sometimes) if I’m in the right place, but no different at all. I assume now it is in the cylinder, somehow blowing by. Beforw I tear slam into that, I was thinking I’d disonnect the hoses, plug them and see if the helm could still be turned slowly. That’d ensure I knew it was worth going all the way into the cylinder.

Bottom line is I can’t determine the fittings for the stupid hoses. They aren’t compression and everything I find act as if every seastar hose is compression and ignores the stnadard hose fittings that come with a new full install kit. I figure I need a hose to npt adapter and then a standard plug or cap will work for my test.

Those who know point me in the right direction please.

Anyone who wants to come fix it for me, I’ll gladly provide the beer.

Try getting some 3/8 compression couplings and use a short piece of tubing with a plug on it to cap it.

they are not anything standard
you have to use hydraulic steering fittings
we haven’t been able to find anything to fit without going to seastar

I have not used these folks, but I know someone who has. He was very pleased with their work and prices.

Boat Steering Rebuilders are great folks. They rebuilt my helm last summer. Sent it on Saturday, had it back the following Friday. Looked/performed like brand new.

I called Butch down there during lunch. He was easy to talk to. He gave me a price for the standard rebuild and then a couple of be-ready-for-this add-on’s that he says hit a lot of people with my problem. He said if the piston ring is bad, there’s a bigger problem. Something is either worn or damaged that shouldn’t be.

Cruising around the web, I found a new setup for a tad more than the same total rebuild price on ebay a minute ago, so I snagged it up. It was from some marine store out of Gulf Shore’s ebay store. They had a “sale” going so I just locked it in. I hope this fixes it or I’ll be a dummy. Worse case, I’ll have a spare. I would have rather tested like I said above, then purchased but I pulled the trigger.

If I didn’t find that, Butch was my next step. On THT, he’s the go-to-guy. I’m sure someone around here does a fine job, but the level of detail shown on Boat Steering Rebuilders website is pretty impressive.
