Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

I run transmission fluid in mine.

Tried the parts stores don’t carry it. Went to Hanckels they had it. I was impressed with the salesperson working the counter. Very knowledgable.

Sure they do, for about 2 dollars. I hope you didnt pay 15 bucks for jack oil…with a Seastar label on it…

sea star hydraulic steering oil isnt jack oil. it has an aviation rating to make sure it doesnt have contaminates or moisture in it. will the other stuff work, yes, it will, but it isnt rated the same.

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

To Rough, that’s why I recommended them… and I’m glad you had the same experience I have had.

Hanckel has done a great job servicing my boat since The Outboard Shop closed.

I’m glad this topic came up. I had air in both my lines which meant the steering wasn’t smooth and I have also read can damage the seals, pump and cylinder. I followed the bleed/purge instructions. Did one side which took two bottles of fluid until the bubbles stopped. It feels good now. Bought a third and did the same technique on the other side but no improvement. Just bought a 2nd bottle for the other side to try to get it right.

Question is, is it normal to use 4 bottles of fluid or am I doing something wrong. $80 worth of fluid is a real kick in the balls I read something about using chessecloth to filter the old fluid and reuse. Does this work?

IMO Hydraulic steering is to expensive not to use the correct fluid, but I don’t want to waste it at 20 bucks a bottle either

I was quoted $24.00 per gallon at an oil dealer for one of the approved substitutes but it turns out that that’s a gallon can without a resealable top. Iended up buying a quart at West Marine but if you needed a gallon, the can would wouk.
