Seewee Bay 7/6

I have been skunked three times in a row at Bushy Park, so I decided to try Seewee again. We launched at about 7:30 this morning and ran down to Bulls Bay near Seewee Bay. We trolled around a few spots throwing artificials and looking for bait. It took a while and a lot of moving around, but we finally found a ton of menhaden when the tide started falling. We moved a lot today, because scouting spots out was an objective in addition to fishing. We ended the day with a few sharks and nothing else. The small sharks were a pain, but the bonnetheads were really fun. We watched a lot of them with their fins and tails out of the water crashing on minnows and menhaden. They are really amazing hunters. We also saw the biggest group of dolphins either of us had ever seen in one place. At one point they all completely surrounded the boat, and I cut the motor and we just drifted and watched them do their thing. There were a lot of baby dolphins in the group, which is always cool to see. I had to stop on the way back up the intracoastal to let some rain pass, but we stayed dry the whole day. One day I’m going to get away from those pesky sharks and catch some reds up there. The water in the intracoastal was really murky down by Seewee Bay. We found much cleaner water in the creeks closer to Bulls Bay and the ocean side. The water up by Buck Hall looked like strong brewed tea. A guy at the boat landing said the stained water is coming from the flooded Waccamaw river. He said he had never seen it so dark.

Yes. They’re much more fun than the sharpnose, IMO.

When the water is over 80 degrees, everything fights better.

If think bonnets are good wait till you get a 3.5’ blacktip on a trout trick with 8lb test!

Hoof, We saw you at the ramp when we were taking out. We were in the 18’ express.

The dirty water messed things up all around.

I went with my daddy to run his crab pots yesterday…wind kicked up a lot after 1000…and we too saw the rain but dodged it. Fished a little …caught some fish including tons of those little sharks…kept moving to get away from them…didnt work…they’d follow the line to the boat in twos at time…too little to swallow the bait…had a line peeler…a big shark of some kind…he never looked back…lol. You are right…bonnet heads are a blast and easy to target as they troll along the banks. Saw a huge tarpon roll…that was cool…was going to toss something in his direction as I had crabs and manhadden…but looked at my nice little reel and said…nahhhhhh…haha wish we had seen you out there. Glad yo had a good day…and fun

Nice pics. Sorry no fish but it looks like overall, the rain has screwed the water up pretty good. Thought about coming down today but the rain here has kept me from doing some things and I’m hoping the water improves down there.

I thought you looked familiar. My fishing buddy really liked your boat.

I’ll stop and chat if I see you out there again.

I had some fun with a few of those small sharks. I let them chase a menhaden all the way to the boat taking bites out of it. Then when they got down to just the head, they got the hook. That got boring after a while. I cranked the big motor up a lot more than I usually do and moved spot to spot doing the same thing - trying to get away. It was good to get to know that area better and get some more trails through there on the GPS.

I forgot to mention that we saw a HUGE sea turtle hanging out by a oyster mound at the end of a sandbar. It took off before I could get a picture. I haven’t seen a sea turtle in the wild in a long time.

Thanks hoof, That one is my dads. I have a ranger 184 Ghost.

I am hoping to be down there some time in the next few weeks. So we may see you all out there.

Maybe the water will be a little better by then…
