seized up steering...

seized up at the motor…best penetrating oil to use?

The Morris Island Lighthouse www.savethelight.org

Any thin solvent/oil will help a lot, wd40, breakfree, etc… Disconnect the motor from the linkage arm and Carefully, using a block of wood or something so as not to mushroom the end of it, tap on the steering rod while having someone apply LIGHT turning pressure to the helm. Once rod is out of steering tube, can take a 12ga bronze bore brush to the inside of tube to clean it out good. Holler if ya need to borrow a bore brush or need a hand.

Just had the same problem. PB Blaster knocked it out.

Try brake fluid!

Blaster is the best stuff around. I have used many different kinds at work and somehow blaster works the best.

I have a sandpaper drum on a long shank that you can use if the bore brush doesn’t work out. I just got done doing this to my friends evinrude on a whaler. It was so crusted the bore brush wasn’t removing it all. Sandpaper drum, some lithium grease and it was 1 finger steering.

without a doubt…hadn’t had the motor in the water since Memorial Day weekend and poor maint led to this issue…now, either become part of the solution or go get your “sugaring” session and provide some comedic humor on this board…:imp:

The problem is the nut behind the steering wheel.

PB Blaster is awesome. But you gotta love this stuff for the name alone. Also I really like CRC 6-56. Keeps my powerhead looking new and coupling on the trailer nice and limber.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

Buy a new steering cable and install it. take the old cable and coil it and place it in a 55 gal drum that has been cut down to make a shallow pan about 6 inches high. cover stuck cable with desiel fuel and let it soak for a couple of weeks it should break loose, then you will have a spare for next time. once every couple of weeks operate your steering to prevent lock up when boat is not in use.
