September Meeting Program

Sorry for the late post everyone. Tonight, Forrest Sessions with the SC DNR will be with us to discuss the hatchery program. Several club members toured the Bayless fish hatchery earlier this year and thought the club would find some of their work fascinating. Additionally, Ron Ahle will be coming by to give us an overview of the information they have been gathering on our recent fish kill event. Please come on out to The Flight Deck tonight and join us. Meeting starts at 7:00. See you there.

A great presentation. Very educational and interesting.

Was out of town over Labor Day, back in town Tuesday evening. Sounds like I missed out on a good presentation. What was Ron Ahle able to share with the Club about the fish kill?

He did although it sounded a little like a pitch for Global Warming … Basically, if I can paraphrase it in layman’s terms, we’ve had a really hot Summer (not really in my opinion, but I’m used to Florida weather) and that created an extra thick layer (about 15’) of dead water (zero oxygen) that the fish couldn’t get back through if they were able to pass over it … this trapped the fish in the hotter water on top and they … well … died …

I didn’t get the sense that they were too concerned about it, but it was enough to bring it to their attention … Not as bad as 2010, but the base numbers they found that week totaled more than the previous 4 years combined …

It only occurred that week (in the end of August - can’t recall the exact dates) and has not occurred since …

… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

Rick,

Thanks for the recap. Glad to hear that fish kill was not as bas as 2010.

Weather service reports we had the most 100 degree days this summer since 1952. So as the old saying goes - “it sure is hot, but not as hot as it used to be.”
