unfortunately i wasnt able to return to the tailrace last year, but in a couple weeks or so i should be able to make it up for a day to take the couple mile paddle for my share of shad and maybe a blue cat or 2. if i were to make it up, anyone wanna join? ill post dates when i have a day picked out.
Where do you put in up there? Never done any shad fishing or much fresh water at all, but ive been wanting to try for some time now. I was also curious about the current. Doesnt the current get insane when they let water out? How do you stay put?
All fishermen are liers except me and you and I’m not sure about you.
i put in at the ramp across from gilligans. yes it is a 2+ mile paddle and a strong, steady pace (not quite i hear banjos speed) it takes me about 40 minutes to get to the dam. each side of the river is very different for current when water runs. facing the dam, the right side gets pretty strong, but theres plenty of pockets you can anchor in out of the current and stay put. i used a 10lb fluke anchor for that and stayed put nicely. yes 10lbs is overkill for a yak, but i randomly had one around and with current like that heavy isnt a bad thing! the left side the current is more steady and you can stay put without too much trouble. both sides produce fish and although not a rookie spot by any means, id say that most experienced yakkers shouldnt have any trouble there after they experience it and figure out what works for them.
