Shad Flies

About three years ago I went with Scotty D shad fishing in the tailrace canal and got hooked. I was just wondering if any body had any advice on what flies and line to use to get the fly down about eighteen feet or so thanks

Small chartruese/pink flies using chenille for the body. Just imitate the grubs you would use on conventinal. We usually run a dropper as well just like when using spinning gear. Hope this helps looking forward to this years run.

thanks for the advice but one more question do you use a sinking line and wrap the shank with lead tinsel

Here are a couple of links to some articles that I’ve found. I hope to get down there to so some of this also. Got the materials to tie up some flies for it just need to sit and do it.

Here’s a shad fly from the southeastern fly fishing forum:

Good luck.

I use hourglass or beadchain eyes for weight. You need some sort of sinking line because that current can rip out of the dam and the fish are down a little bit.
