Anyone have any good pictures of shad flies that would work on the shad in SC, i have fly fished for them up north but the shad down here dont act anything like the shad up north. Got a bunch on my six weight last year and am planning on chasing them with the 3 this year!
I tied a few for the swap last year. I did not get any feed back but I caught several last year. #6 aberdeen, chartruese or hot pink eyes, chartruese chenile, chartruese super hair. Just tie it like a bugger or clouser. They are not picky when they are running. I think I fished with you last year?
yheah rookie, i was one of those kids in that loud group of college kids there, we will be back this year, hopefully with some fly rods and more light tackle.
chart. marabou tail, vinyl rib or thread base (chart) and brite chenille or dubbing wrapped around lead eyes. i’ll try and post a pic when the wife returns with the camera. i upped it to a six wt for 2 reasons. heavier to throw sink tips and i killed to many fishing on a 4wt. they simply ran till exhaustion and then was a pull of a dead fish. id rather get em in quick and jump a few more. in the tailrace anyway, you gotta get em down deep so a sink tip or full sinking line will work well. short 4-5’ leaders and any color works as long as its chartreuse. pics to come
Ive always used a 6wt with a sinking tip up north where your not allowed to keep shad, figure this year i might keep a couple for the crab trap since im leaving it in all winter
Im not fishing the tailrace though, i heard that place can be a zoo
ive never started till around v-day in the tailrace. it can be crazy, but its because the fish are there in big numbers. down 12-18’ on the sides although they will rise up somewhat. 2 fly rig same fly. (swingin steelhead/wetfly style) the jonboat mafia…that place has character(s). good through march. im down whenever yall wanna get a group up there for a floatilla.
active through the beg. of april. i tried to get a houseboat rental co. on the lake to let me take it through the locks but no dice. i wanted to stay up there. i even looked at a few rental houses, not bad if we worked it like a duck camp everyyear. cheap. my wife knows the type o man she married. i have stayed in the lot there in a p.o.s rv till monks corners finest asked me “to move it along” (they let us stay the night). we could, in theory, rent a dump up dat a way and for 50 a man have a place to crash and get your head right. just a thought…rough night behind the bar, just want anutha day on the water asap
shad are fun… i just take a gold aberdeen hook… add some lead eyes, a chartruse flash wing, and dub the head with pink ice dub… done… and they work well…
Ill throw down on a dirtbag shad trip… im a dirtbaggin’ som-ma b****…
I have never been shad Fishing but if two boats would be better than one Im down to join in a shad dirt bag trip. Got a five weight collecting dust. yall let me know??
Yeah I remeber ya’ll Champ. Scottie did you and Jeremy ever go back to the spot I took ya’ll to? Did ya’ll like the shad fly I tied last year in the swap? That’s what I caught 90% of my fish on. Stretch, we’ll def hook up and go.
